Hey all,

Yes it is a beautiful machine indeed; mum loves it and I think she's finally admitted that she's found a washer that was just as good as her first Hoover! Have been using it a lot yesterday and today (been catching up with the laundry that has built up over the past few weeks we've had no washer downstairs, and of course my washer has been off limits to all family laundry but towels and bedding), and it's a very good machine, of course I didn't expect anything but the best. To my surprise my mum has actually been able to use it too - anything with an electronic display often just confuses her!

Dan - as I said on the phone lastnight I'm sure you can't wait either to come see this Miele. Only just over a week now until you're here again!

Richard - it definitely was an upgrade from the Zanussi. The Mieles a brilliantly well made machine, although to be fair for the price I expect it, and to be honest the Zanussi wasn't that badly built either considering it was only £300. Hopefully this washer should last my mum at least as long as her Hoover did!

Jamie - can I say I told you so? :-P I told you the dial machines were just as beautiful - can't beat the backlit dial, it's nice to see such a vintage feature still available on a machine today.

Eugene - I have to say as with any other European washer capacity isn't really an issue - again one load in this Miele (which is 6 kilos, versus my own which is 5 kilos) filled up one of the washing lines (about 12 metres long), and at that I had trouble to squeeze it all onto one line. Shame I didn't take a picture really - will do of the next load. But then I suppose it's all what you are used to :-).

Nick - we decided on the classic model because all the new design models with a free 10 year warranty had the control panels on the front of the top of the machine, and so it would have to stick out if we had one otherwise the worktop would obstruct the controls, however the utility room is too narrow to do that so we went with a traditional flat controlled model. Was going to opt for the cheapest one with variable temperature - but the model we got was only £40 more than that which was worth it for all the extra features you get. Performance is equal - both are good performers, however the cycles & tumbling rhythms do vary between the two. Whilst my own Miele tumbles at 55rpm for 5 seconds before slowing down to 40rpm for 5 seconds and then isntantly reversing, tumbling the same way and so on, the new Miele does quite long tumbles - about 30 seconds long and again instant reversing. However, on the new Miele the tumbles start off slow, and gradually get faster and then in the middle of each tumble it distributes for a few seconds before gradually slowing down again and then reversing. Reminds me a bit of Powerstream Hotpoints, and it really does seem to drive the detergent into the load - and creates a lot of suds in the meantime! Quietness mum's is even quieter than mine as hers has the brushless motor - spinning is nothing but a mere hum of the drum moving, like a commercial washer, whereas on mine you can hear the motor noise - it isn't loud on my Miele but it is audible. This new Miele is quieter than the freezer I'm sure during the final spin! If anything, the dryer is louder than the washer at any point of the cycle - bearing in mind our dryer is a Bosch so fairly quiet, yet the old Bosch and Zanussi would drown out the dryer noise on the fast spin.

Peter - be careful otherwise you'll be joining Jason for a slap! :-)

Austin - thanks for the congratulations. Hope to chat online again soon!

All the best guys, thanks for the congratulations - it definitely is appreciated, although I feel a bit of a snob now with 2 Miele's. I'm sure not even Hyacinth Bouquet has 2 Miele's!

Videos to come hopefully this weekend; if not it'll be next weekend as I am away next week. (Staying with my Auntie with the Miele's actually, as I used to call her when I was young)

Re: Great Machines:

Hey! Jon, sorry to hear about the Zanussi going out so soon. I think that it has a smart looking Control Panel. The new Miele that your Mum got is smart looking as well. I do however tend to like the older style Control Panels, similar to the one you have up in your Bed Room. I see that next to your Miele is your AEG, which Brand of Dryer do you have on top of the AEG, is it a Condenser or Vented Model?

Have fun trying to trading Miele Washers with your Mum, if you even thought about trying at all. She would no doubt want to keep her new one, even if yours might not be very old yet anyway.

Peace and Fun Laundry Times, with your Miele and AEG, Steve

Re: Hey! Jon, do you possibly:

Have any Control Panel Pix's of the Zanussi Washer, that just went out on you Guys? I would appreciate it if you do have any?

What Capacity did it have, compared to the Miele's are they similar of quite different Capacities?

Wouldn't you have missed the Honeycomb Tub on the Miele, if your Mum had gotten another Zanussi Washer Jon?

Hi Steve!

Have got a control panel of the Zanussi at the end of this post. It was a very ingenious design - very simple to use, and has been used by Zanussi for the past 6 years or so and I imagine it would continue to do so for a few years - those Zanussi's are so simple to use even though they are electronic & very flexible in programme selection. The control panels between mine and my mum's are more or less identical - only difference being mum's has a dial to select programmes rather than the touchbuttons on mine. The dryer on top of the AEG is it's matching condenser dryer that I bought along with the AEG washer in 2004. Wish I could say positive things about it, and even though it's good and even at drying, it's noisy, takes 2 hours to dry towels after 1600rpm!!!!, requires lots of maintenance and makes the room really hot when operating. Lookign forward to the day I'll be able to afford a Miele vented dryer!

The Zanussi has a 7 kilo capacity. Mum's Miele has a 6 kilo capacity and IMO there isn't much of a difference in any between the Zanussi and the new Miele drums; however both are larger than my Miele upstairs which has the more traditional 5kg drum. I have to say that while the Honeycomb drum is nice, I wouldn't buy a Miele solely for that feature as we have washed delicates and woollens for years in standard drum washers without any trouble.

Anyway here's a pic of the Zanussi washer for you, enjoy!

Take care,

Jon

COOL MACHINE! I love the look of that control panel glowing, and that light inside the washdrum. It looks pretty simple and intuitive to use. I always like washers you can directly adjust the wash temperature. My Danby's like that. Does that one have an internal heater? I guess it does if it runs on 220V. They were selling Miele's here on this side of the pond at Lowe's for a while, but I haven't seen them lately. I think recently they replaced them with Bosch's

BTW, what kind of fridge is that? It must have a huge freezer, top or bottom?

Jon, Congratulations on the new Miele. I am jealous that you can still select higher water level rinses. If I could change two things about mine, I would liike to have high speed spins between the wash and rinses in the W1918 and the ability to get high water level rinses in the W1986.

So, does the tub light stay on through the whole cycle? What does "Further Extras" mean? Does the selection "Further Programmes" bring up different cycles or is it a provision for some yet to be invented cycle? I read that the UK is going to crack down on household energy & water use so you might have one of the last series of Mieles that allow the higher rinses. If it's good to have a Miele, it's even better to have two. Hope you enjoy yours in health, wealth and happiness for all time.

Is there anything besides the Mieles at your Aunties for fun and excitement?
Best wishes, Tom

Hi all,

Steven, yep this Miele has an internal heater - in fact most if not all frontloaders ever produced for sale in the UK have had inbuilt heaters for the past 20 or 30 years (correct me if I'm wrong, Mike et al). The fridge freezer next to the washer is the "spare" fridge freezer which acts as an overflow from the tiny one in the kitchen. It's a bottom freezer, not sure of the cu.ft but the freezer has 4 drawers and the fridge is the same size, except with shelves instead of drawers obviously.

Tom, the tub light only remains switched on if the machine is turned on but a programme isn't running - and also when you open the door at the end of the cycle. It turns off once you press the start button, unfortunately really as it would be pretty cool for watching :-). Further Extra brings up an additional set of options via the menu - Extra Rinse, Soak, and Rinse Hold. Further Programmes brings up more programmes via the LCD menu - Dark Garments, Curtains, Pillows, Sportswear, Outerwear, Proofing, and Separate Rinse - same as the Specal Programmes button on my Miele however my Miele only has 4 programmes (Outerwear, Denim, Shirts & Starch) available on the separate programmes menu. Never knew about the crackdown on water use in the UK! Although if a lot of brands of washer here cracked down on water use even more, a lot of washers won't be using water! Does your 1918 not spin fast between rinses? Both of my Miele's spin at 1000rpm between rinses, and the length of the interim spins depends on the weight of the load and how much water the load absorbs & extracts (during the spin).

My aunt lives only a 30 minute train journey away from London, so hopefully there will be a day or two spent there, probably with a negative effect on the bank account with shops and all that.

Thanks everybody else for their responses,

Jon

Wow, cool new machine. I'd never knew that people would light the interior of the washer.

Has any mildew built up in the soap dispenser yet?
