Spray rinse question

I'm currently using a BOL WP DD washer made about 10 years ago. Unlike other washers I've used, it does not do spray rinses during the first spin (after wash/before rinse spin) on the Normal Cycle. (Although why I'd ever use "Normal" is puzzling, given that I'm nothing but a normal person. LOL)

 

I'm assuming this lack of spray rinses is by design, although I suppose it's entirely possible that something is broken...

 

So I've wondered off and on: how important are those first spin spray rinses when it comes to rinsing laundry? I can make all sorts of arguments in my mind. Part of me thinks spray rinses might help with the rinsing process. Another part of me thinks that if they mattered, WP would have included them. Then, again, they might have been omitted for some reason (cost savings or perhaps to meet some water usage goal).

 

Does anyone have any opinions about whether first spin spray rinses are important?

Spray rinse question

Spray rinces are important and it makes you confident about the rince ability of your washer. My old GE Medallion had a 40/45 sec spray rince before the rince and final spin that actually sprayed the entire wash basket.

This however depend on how the clothes are sprayed evenly.

I sometimes would forgo the rince cycle on small loads on my GE medallion. However I would not use the Eco cycle on pre 2018 SQ as I found it inefficient from vids I've seen.

they do a short slow spin one after the static wash drain to help the detergent spin out.
The entire rinse fill is a slow spin, unless it's a non wash plate model which deep rinses every rinse. If you don't use too much detergent, they rinse well.

My 1986 DD Lady Shredmore also didn't have a spray rinse between wash and rinse on normal or delicate (which I thought was stupid).  It only did on the Perm Press cycle and that was AFTER the cool down.  I think it impacted rinsing and pretty much always used extra rinse on Normal cycle.  Later versions of DD Kenmore models featured ultra rinse and that did do spray rinses (2) on the spin between wash & rinse.  Friend of mine from college, his family had a very late 1980s early 1990s series 70 washer & dryer that did this.  Firs5t time I heard the washer do these spray rinses, I thought I'd missed part of the cycle.  Fortunately had to run another load and it did it.  I really felt cheated then. But due to water usage concerns, later versions eliminated this again.  My partner's 11 y/o Admiral DD also doesn't do spray rinses between wash and rinse.

The Perm Press cycle, if the machine has such, may have a couple sprays in the first spin (and none in the final).  I have a 2003 TOL model that functions as such (the PP sprays are tagged on the dial as "Cool Down").

First spin sprays on DD machines:

Are not that common unless you are talking about a Perm. Press cycle. The exceptions for a Normal/Cotton Sturdy cycle would be the electronic KM Limited and the KM Ultra Rinse machines.

late 90s Kenmore

Our old 98 Kenmore did not perform a spray rinse before the rinse. This machine always had ridiculous amounts of suds in the rinse despite having moderately hard water and using appropriate amounts of detergent. I never understood the purpose of having the spray rinse after the deep rinse. The Maytag DC at a relative's summer home uses a spray rinse before and after the rinse. It rinses very well even with soft water. I would have really liked to see a Catalyst or Resource Saver recirculation type spray rinse or two before the final rinse.

The early up to about 1990 Maytags had a one minute spinning spray rinse after the spinning drain cycle post wash, it is wonderful and forgoes the need to run the clothes through a second deep rinse and the deep rinse water ends up having virtually no suds in it and is almost clear. Later models cut the spinning spray rinse to 15 seconds and the rinse water quality is noticeably sudsier. I'm not a fan, though these models do have the 15 second spray rinse after the deep rinse too during the final spin, which the earlier models with the one minute spray rinse do not have. When my early model gives up the goat with that one minute spray rinse it will be sorely missed as it is much more efficient than two deep rinses but almost as effective. It really does a good job of rinsing away the heaviest of soapy dirty water out of the clothes before the deep rinse.
