That is a backflow preventer - to prevent contamination entering the drinking water supply system. I was the Regional Cross Connection Control Officer here in Victoria.

Niagara falls are wonderful but...

Once Mrs. Rosevelt said: "Poor Niagara", amazed with the huge size of the "Devil's Throat", at the Iguassu Falls.

If we compare the Niagara Falls with the Iguassu Falls, the first is a lawn sprinkler.

Isn't Mother Nature wonderful and perfect?

Finally have a picture of how I am spending my spring and summer. After 32 years of running 3-5 miles a day, 10k's, half marathons and the Marine Corp Marathon, i had to have surgery on my achilles tendon. Working my new job as a cook was causing severe pain after standing all day. The dr had to remove a golfball size piece of scar tissuse. So far i have had little to no pain and its been a week. I get to stay out of work till after the 4th of July. I needed to have this done now as I have to ready to walk my daughter down the aisle on the beach at Disney World in October this fall.

They're Back !

Its spring in New Jersey and the Goldfinches are back.
The Goldfinch is the State bird of NJ.
Actually, the hummingbirds are back too and I've had alot
of them at my feeder but they wouldnt stay put while I shot
this picture.
Its ok....they don't smile much anyway.

The 1st time I ever saw one I thought it was a bird that escaped from a Pet Store. I had no idea what it was.
Then thru some research at a local library (before computers) I found it was a Goldfinch and how to lure them to your yard.
Now I hang up feeders with thistle in them around the yard and sure enough the birds do appear. Thistle is the only thing that I've found that will lure them though. They are at the feeders from day break until dark.
I believe that the proper name for thistle is niger (pronounced nigh-ger)
Thistle is expensive and these little fellas can EAT !

"My" hummers love to pose for the camera. Hummingbirds are a year-round thing here. They easily drain two one-quart feeders every week.

Oh yes, hummers can really suck up that nectar !
I make my own by boiling 2 cups of water with 1 cup of sugar.
I'm sure they're different varieties of hummers because the
ones I get here look different than the ones in your picture.

Congrats on getting their picture...mine just won't hold still.
