I remember those Sunbeam sprinkers as well. Very popular, I remember seeing those as early as 1962 or so.

I am so tired of moving sprinklers, sprinklers that flip over when the water is turned on, etc. I found out that it is not all that expensive to have a sprinkler system installed. I got a quote the other day for about $1100. We may do it.

powerfin,

WOW! Sounds like you have a ton of stuff! I don't have very many many right now because I have such a small place and not even a yard to water! That'll change soon though thank goodness.

whirlcool,

sprinkler systems are very nice to have but it can still be fun to pull out an old favorite and sip your tea in the lawn chair while you watch it. :-)

hehe...I guess once we get to Portland we'll have to have a "Water-In" and a "Wash-In"! And call me strange, but I'm one of those people that like to wonder what it was like years before I was born. I will probably throw a load of clothes in the Westinghouse top-loader, water the grass with a 1974 Rainbird, and put on a top record artist from that time. Would be cool to have all of those sounds together like it would have been before. :-)

I've wanted to find one of those old K3 types for a long time. We never had one, but neighbors did when I was growing up and I too was intrigued by the dial and the power those things had.

Growing up we had a 50's "Everain" (I think?) oscillator, probably one of the earliest types, very plain and basic, and it did a better job than later models. I don't know what happened to it but it was used well into the 70's.

The home I own has no piped-in sprinkler system and I've been using a Nelson "Pattern Master" rainbird type and it does a great job without a lot of overspray onto the sidewalk so people can walk by without getting wet. For being made entirely of plastic it has held up well for over 15 years. I have a spare pattern ring for it that has never been used.

I also have an interest in old sprinkler heads from piped-in systems. My parents' house was built in the 20's and had many old heads. I saved those that didn't break during removal but I think my dad may have tossed them all after I moved out of the house.

I'm considering a piped-in system for my front lawn. During the summer it becomes a real chore to drag out the hose reel and set up the Pattern Master. If anyone has suggestions for the best type of sprinkler heads for good coverage, I'd be interested in hearing from you.

Ralph,

I guess it depends alot on the size of your lawn and shapes, etc. My parents have a smaller yard and had a system installed. It just uses the basic pop-up spray heads by Toro. Anything bigger you'd probably be looking at gear-drive sprinkler heads (work well for large yards, but low water pressure) or pulsating heads. There is alot of literature you can read online about this stuff too.

Jon

Rainbirds rule. I don't water my grass with them but do own a big one that I take to the park and hook up for all the kids to play in. I love the "machine gun" noise they make.

I have a newer Nelson Rainshower.

It's fine, I guess -- not really into sprinklers -- but the instructions on the box are great! I hope my scan turns out legibly.

Sprinkler Parties and shows

New to the site. Thanks for the cool stuff.
Has anyone heard of lawn sprinkler parties and shows likke the water shows at the Belagio in Vegas? I have this dream of neighborhood sprinkler show with timed watering and set to music.
I live in "disturbia" and everyone is competing with each other for the greenest lawn and best sprinkler systems. Thought it might be fun to has a Summer event like Christmas lights in Winter. ( another big event here)
Thanks again.

Theme Sprinklers

OK collectors, the one sprinkler I have wanted for years was produced when Pope John-Paul II was visiting the U.S.

Apparently this is a rotating sprinkler with the likeness of the Pope that spins around with arms outstretched, and the name of the sprinkler is "Let us Spray."

Anybody seen one or have one? I, along with countless others who endured Catholic school in the 60's, want one!

Ralph

I appreciate sprinklers too. I especially had a fondness for the Poppy our neighbor down 2 houses when I was a kid. I thought the tires on it were cool. They were the proper scale for the size of the sprinkler.

We had a cast iron traveling sprinkler. It weighed a ton. You layed out the hose and connected the sprinkler to the end, then set it up so the front, of 3 wheels, was on the hose. Then it would slowly move, propelled by the water, using the hose as a track. It looked like a small tractor. It could be funny if the sprinkler came off the "track" and started going what ever direction. And if you forgot to turn it off it would come up to the faucet or whatever until it got stuck. lol. If the groung got soaked or it was on a hill it was known to fall over. lol.

No, the Poppy was cool. It didn't move unless you moved it. And it didn't weigh in as compared to an engine block(not fun to drop on your foot or trip over when walking through the yard at night, Damn IT!). Plus the Pink Panther used one in those infamous cartoons to paint a room once. I've occasionally thought how "free style" that would be to hook up a pressured painting system to a Poppy sprinkler and turn it on in a room for like a minute and see what the effect is. sigh, one of these days, one of these days.

Also fond of the plastic Nelson Oscillating sprinklers. The small ones. They are quiet, gentle, light weight, slow, fun to jump through. And they have a dial so you can choose the pattern. It is like a timer,- sophisticated.

Don't care for the pulsating sprinklers. Too noisey. don't work for small areas. Hard to run through. Ugly. looks like an Anorexic duck.

The multi pattern models were cool. you simply turned the top and chose a pattern you liked out of like 8 choices. No moving parts here but practical.

Soaker hoses were weird. They made a hissing sound and It looked like a rotten hose with leaks , EVERYWHERE. And they didn't water evenly.

You Boys & Your Lawn Toys! *LOL*

Neat collection!

Remember such things from when Daddy and the other area men would set them out to water their lawns. Which during the hot summer months, was a cue for every child to don their swimming attire (or not), and run back and forth under the sprinkler.

Congrats Jonathan...

These threads move so quickly; I probably should have sent you an email. But, I'm glad you saw my post and won the eBay auction. Congrats.
