SQ motor woes

The motor on the solid tub SQ will not work. It hums but does not start. Is there a capacitor on this machine? I have looked in the control panel and down by the motor but I don't see it. Did this motor have an integrated starter capacitor?
If so, does anyone have a donor motor or know where to find one? Ebay has turned up nothing in the past few months nor have I seen any solid tubs for sale on craigslist in the ON, NY, PA & OH area.
Thoughts, anyone?

There were no start capacitors in motors on solenoid driven solid tub SQ's as far as I remember. Most likely the problem is with the motor start switch located in the end bell of the motor. I would take the motor out and examine the switch, many times they just need to be cleaned and lubricated.

How do I know if its a reversing motor or solonoid?
I do not recall hearing banging solenoids but its been awhile since its run.
I can't post photos right now, but there are some on post 33963. What should I be looking for?

Well in the front down by the motor, if its a regular one direction motor(counter-clockwise only), there should be 2 huge magnets, one in the center is for the agitation, and the one on the right is for the spin.....trust me, you would know if you have them, the slam as they engage will make you jump........

reversing motor does not have these solenoids........

reversing motor has a engagement arm to make it agitate(counter-clockwise), which is connected to the tranny pulley in the far back left of the machine......the spin is engaged automatically when the motor turns clockwise

SQ WASHER MOTORS

I thought that we already decided that you had a 1970s model with a reversing motor. In any case SQ did not use start capacitors on these either as standard factory equipment. The motor does have a centrical switch it could be this or the windings them seleves, the bearings, bad wire connection or of coerce the timer.

 

Welcome to the world of old washers, I seem to remember that you said that this SQ would outlast your neighbors new LG or Samsung washer many times over. But in any case if you send me your phone # I will be happy to try to help you figure out what is really wrong and help you decide if you can fix it. I have some parts for these and know someone that has a lot of parts for these ST SQs John.

Pride before a fall...

Ugh, I probably did say that. Well when it works, its a blast. It fits right in with every other mechanical thing around here. The house, the tractors, the vintage baler. Even DD's pony is a veritable antique.
I'm sure its a reversing motor, the switch is on the bottom. Would really like to fix it, not scrap it. May have to swap it out with the Amana currently in the barn. We found a donor to replace the tranny on that machine.

Have you made sure it's not the pump thats seized up causing the motor to hum and not turn?

The pump started this whole ordeal. The pump went bad so I bought a new one. Once installed, the motor wouldn't work. When the pump quit, the motor still agitated and spun with a full tub. So now it has a brand new pump but the motor won't work. Welcome to the world of old washers indeed. Well, I would rather fix a washer that I like than buy a new piece of energy star junk according to their planned obsolescence schedule.This spring the Sears guy actually told me the new washer I was looking at would only last 3-5 years!
It will be nice to have the Amana back while we play with the SQ. If only washers weren't so heavy, I could have more old favorites to do laundry! There is an A712 Maytag that is very tempting.

start winding circuit

on reversing motor washers,the motor's start winding circuit runs through the timer
where the start winding circuit polarity is switched to run one way or the other-
problem could be the motor,timer,or wiring in between-time to grab an ohmmeter and
start checking... if you don't have one,a $15 cheapie will be good enough for
vintage washer electrical troubleshooting-a wiring diagram for your machine will
help with the process.
