Stains On New Carpet!

I recently moved into a new apartment in which carpet was added (it used to be just tile flooring).

Anyway, I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing, and got some silicone lubricant (quiet, Toggles ) on one small part of the carpet, and in trying to free some rust off a wheel on my dresser (this thing is old as the hills and is metal), got some WD-40 on another area.

I tried a bit of generic Resolve on the silicone spot, following the instructions on the bottle, but the stain can still be seen. I've yet to try anything on the WD-40 spot yet.

A few times at Dollar Tree, I've seen something called Spot Shot, which can be used on carpets. Is this any good?

Any comments, suggestion or advice on removing these stains will greatly be appreciated.

I have had good luck using a mild solution of laundry detergent like Tide in a cool to luke warm temperature. I would saturate the stained area and then suck the water out with a shop vac, if you have one. You may have to repeat several times. Once the stain has been lifted, repeat the process with clean water to rinse. Afterwards, use pure white paper towels and stand on the to press out as much moisture as possible. Repeat until towels no longer wick up moisture. Hit with a hair dryer if you like and then vacuum to lift the pile.

We have dogs...

...and one has a 'drip' issue...

Over and above that, I have had great success shifting red wine and wostershire sauce with 'nifti' here.

One of the main ingredients is ammonia....find a product that smells like it, dampen the stain a little, a quick shot (not several) and agitate with your fingers....mop up and then rinse and mop several times....

Spot Shot works on some stains, not on others. It does not seem to "set" stains on which it does not work, so it's worth a try. When it works, it works like gangbusters. How-EVAH:

If you value the carpet - to say nothing of your security deposit - a Dirt Devil Spot Scrubber is a good investment. It's a mini hot-water extraction machine with a rotating scrub brush, about the size of a Dustbuster. It uses regular steam-cleaning shampoo, which you can get at any grocery store, in the Rug Doctor display. While they're a little spendy new at about $40-65, you can often find reconditioned ones on the Dirt Devil website for about $30 (linkie below), and there's always eBay too. Think of it as protecting your deposit.

Sold at Sears is a product called:

Capture, that is a Dry Cleaning Powder that can be used on Carpet, as well as on Fabric Furniture. I've got a Dispenser/Cleaner that you put some of the Capture in a front holding container, where it gets distributed and the Brushes brush it into the Carpet, then you put the Switch onto Vacuum and it pulls the Dirty Powder and Dirt into a Cylindar, similar to the Bagless Vacuum Cleaners have.

It is called a Fantom Capture Carpet Cleaning Machine. I bought it quite some time ago around 1995 or 1996, from JC Penney's. The Friends that had the Carpet and Linoleum Business that I bought the Burber Carpet and Linoleum from, told me to never use anything other than Capture, for cleaning the Carpets.

I would imagine that even though I've not checked other places, that there might be other than Sears selling the Capture. I'm not sure also about whether or not JC Penney's still sells the Capture Carpet Cleaning Machine.

Dear Bill,

Always have paper towels nearby when using lubricant. One can be reasonably sure a mess will follow. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pond of cure!
