I haven't seen it yet, but we plan to on Monday (avoid the crowds)I am looking very much forward to it.

From what I heard to enjoy this movie you need not have seen any other Trek movie of TV show and still enjoy it. That'll bring more people into the Trek universe.

Last night on TV I saw that both Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy were on a chat show together. Leonard said that he thought the new Mr.Spock was dead on his approach to the character. So that's kind of a "blessing".

Leonard also said that everyone was glad that Chris Pine who plays Capt. Kirk did not follow William Shatners method of acting and took a new approach to the character. However the guy who played Dr. McCoy did his character exactly the way DeForest Kelley did it, and in the movie both characters were perfect!
We have a new IMAX theater near us so we'll see it in that format. We hope we are blown away by it!

We're going next week

I have a group of friends here who are seriously into Star Trek.

Every review I've read so far here in Europe has said its very well done and Chris Pine has managed to do Kirk without doing William Shatner.

Double entendres implied.

Just, I wish Shatner hadn't been so nasty to Merritt Butrick who was dying of Aids. That really soured me on him.

He has us to thank for his career, the least he could have done was to be gracious.

Awful,

Allen, at a time when everyone knew that you couldn't catch Aids without blood/semen transfer, he made an enormous seen about having to touch and hold the guy.
Then he did this whole touching tribute to him thing-y when he died shortly later.

Disgusting and, to be fair, Shatner has since apologized - something he's not good at and publicly admitted to having behaved poorly.

Still, it bothered me because it happened at a time when I was translating a film with lip-syncing (horrid, simply horrid) and nearly everyone I worked with was either coping with being positive or had a lover who was or was dying of the disease.

Gosh. There but for the grace of God...

BIG TREKKIE HERE...places around me so jammed packed...all dreesed in "STARFLEET" gear...it's a sight to see...but I love it....even the security guards were dressed as Klingons...great for effect....they should do this for many other films...kinda sets the scene for you...but I'm gonna make it there soon...

I can't wait to see the movie. I'm a big Star Trek fan, more TNG than original but like both, and I especially like all of the movies. I was really disappointed when the Star Trek experience closed in Las Vegas - I really wanted to go someday.

> at a time when everyone knew that you couldn't catch Aids without blood/semen transfer <

What time would that have been? Lots of people (probably millions) *still* think HIV can be transmitted without blood/semen transfer.

I'm not defending Shatner, I'm only saying AIDS caused a huge amount of fear, and in 1989 lots of people were still very afraid of it. Just a few years earlier, Doris Day was hailed as some kind of brave champion simply for holding Rock Hudson before he passed away.

My favorite is also the ST:TNG series. "The Inner Light" episode is the best Trek ever IMO, although a close second is the "Wrath of Khan" film with the original cast.

Saw it yesterday

I went and saw it yesterday, and found it was pretty good all round may even go and see it again, I agree with posters about Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine playing their roles really well, although I am not really a "Trekkie" as such, I did enjoy the film and liked the original series, I remember the old Sunday nights well, first Mum and Dad would watch the 6pm news, then it was the Wonderful World of Disney from, 6.30pm to 7.30pm and then Star Trek until 8.30 pm then the sunday night movie.
You know there are times when I yearn for the old days to come back.

When did they close down the Star Trek Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton? I went through it a few times and really enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun but the waiting times to enter were always long because of the amount of people waiting to view it.
The first time I saw it was on the second day of operation.

The Star Trek Experience closed Sept. 1, 2008. I just checked Wikipedia and it is going to reopen at another location, the Neonopolis Mall, in 2010, more emphasis on original Star Trek over TNG.

Well, I hope they have better luck at Neonopolis than other businesses who have tried there. That place is a ghost town. They recently renamed it Fremont Square.

When you walk through the place you keep thinking "How long have I got before this thing is closed and demolished for a new hotel?"

Focus more on the original series? That's some majorly screwed up marketing. Most people today weren't even born when TOS aired in the 1960's.

Saw it last night, only because a friend here had a group rate and invited us. Neither my partner or I are fans, but this ST movie sounded a little different. It was OK, but I'm just not into the whole blowing up things and peppered whooshing noises type of film. I found the characters likable and well done and enjoyed the more light-hearted dialogue here and there, and thought Chris Pine did a great job. Not bad to look at for a youngster either.

What annoyed me most about the experience was the trailer assault before the feature even started. The show time was 7:40. We got in there around 7:25 and the trailers were already going. Some sort of AMC Theaters compilation. Then as 7:40 came and went, more trailers from the studios themselves, a few of them repeats of the same stuff on the AMC version. And every last one of them was aliens attacking Earth, the giant metal kind, and a bunch of stuff blowing up. To me they all looked like trailers for the same damned movie. It's no wonder I have no respect for Hollywood and what they turn out anymore. Meanwhile, it was 7:55 when ST actually started. I was beyond annoyed by that time. What gives with this BS? I guess it's obvious that my partner and I don't go to the mainstream movies very much.

I'm an indie film guy through and through, that's for sure.

Merritt Butrick

Interesting information I never knew what happened to him. Was he gay? I remember noticing him first on "Square Pegs" along with Sarah jessica, and thought he was adorable(and a perfect choice for JT Kirk's son) in Star Drek II(haven't seen the new one yet; II so far was the best of all of them). One more name to Google.

Indie

I am truly an Indy guy also ,have been since the very first one.You are right about the trailers, what I do i go in 10min after their starting time usually hit the beginning right in the nose. You do lose your anticipation with those numbing previews.Bobby
