Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Well, if they could confirm if the appliances were still working, it would be worth something... The GE washer/dryer combos of this vintage are not all that easy to work on - trust me! The timers for both the washer-dryer and dishwasher are more likely to be dead than not.
Melissa, if this would work in your new kitchen, by all means contact the seller to see how negotiable they might be.

I'm impressed,up to the asking price.I think this is the first time I've seen a complete one that looks halfway decent but then as mentioned,do all the appliances work? I wonder if Melissa will be checking this out?

thanks guys!

I'm so flattered you guys are all looking out for me! Yes it's a beauty. And yes, I already contacted the owner - and he laughed at my offer. I mostly want the chrome top because I don't have one.

what I want is the fridge/ deep-freeze + cabinet combo. (Assuming somebody doesn't buy it from under me before I pick it up) I think I have everything except the deep-freeze & stainless countertop.

I'm really looking for one with a working fridge. I'm one of those people who likes the look of vintage appliances, but if they don't work, it drives me crazy.

I need a daily driver. It'll be the main fridge for a family of 4 (till I get my V-handle up and running - oh I can't wait - thank you Travis!!). Speaking of my family, my little gal just woke up to come say hello and thank you for your help in redoing our kitchen. I better put her back to sleep!

Really you guys made my night by helping me in my quest! Thank you.

Melissa, no offense but I would sure think long and hard about it before getting these. As cool and as nice as they look, living with these appliances that are 50+ years old could prove a disaster. Especially if you depend on them as daily drivers. There really are places you can buy brand new retro looking appliances now. I would sure think about it. Take it from one who knows and has done it. While great to look at and play with, when something goes out on any of them it is practically impossible to find replacement parts. Timers, motors, bearings, compressors, thermostats...any number of things can go wrong. Not trying to rain on your parade, but I sure suggest you be aware of all that could happen even if they work properly right now. Newer appliances have made great strides since these were made.

Poorly Written Ad

Literally, so to speak.  That is my guess.  I was behind someone in line at Target and she was texting using the zig-zag method and doing it so fast that I can't imagine it came out with much coherence on the other end.

I'm betting that's how the CL ad was written.  Alas, proofreading has been reduced to a courtesy, which we all know was the first casualty when personal communications devices became commonplace.

I wouldn't pay $300 for that thing...

Melissa, I wonder if the seller will still be laughing when he calls Burtec...the local garbage company...and they tell him it needs to be hauled to the curb for pick up?

I doubt that thing came out of any of the homes Sinatra had here or any other celebrities. I do remember that the last time I saw a Frank Sinatra house for sale it mentioned it included a helicopter pad and a Ronson Foodmatic in the kitchen...like everyone knows what that is!

Retro Vs Vintage ...

Brucelucenta - I totally hear what you're saying about living with vintage appliances as daily drivers - I agree completely. However, I've tried every permutation of a smeg/ northstar/ Big Chill/GE Artistry. None of them are counter depth like a vintage fridge except the smegs - and they only hold 11 cu ft, which is absurdly small and they have to be defrosted(kinda like a wonder kitchen fridge!)  There's also something about the smegs - they feel kinda flimsy, especially when compared to a modern fridge. The closest to a normal size fridge that's 24" deep is a Northstar, but that's still 31" deep, which is way too deep. Not to mention the 4000+ price tag, which is just way too expensive.  The GE artistry is the best option, but it's 32" deep.

I'd be happy to have a wide fridge, but I don't want it to be deeper than my counters.  If it is so deep it would overwhelm my kitchen.  (I know you're thinking a V-Handle is 31" deep or something - but - a philco V-Handle - it's a piece of art! I'm thrilled to have that stick out!

Interestingly in Europe they seem to have a few fridges that fit the bill, though they still have to be defrosted. You can't buy them in the US though.  So the thought of hiring somebody in Europe, figuring out how to ship to the US & then converting it to work in the US, it was too much. But I'm still open to suggestions... if you can find an affordable modern fridge, that has the 40's/50s rounded chrom-y looks AND is counter depth & affordable, please let me know!  That was the original plan....

My solution - go vintage - hide modern...

I like the wonder kitchen because I think I can tuck in some modern appliances behind the matching cabinets. Under the wall cabinet fridge, I'm going to try to do frezer drawers. I'm hoping I can hide them behind a GE cabinet door or maybe even use the metal drawers like panels.  What do you think?

I'm definitely going to get supplemental washers and dryers because that's non-negotiable & they'll go in the 'laundry room' (ahem coat closet)  And I'll have a modern panel ready dishwasher. But even if I have modern backups, I really love having working vintage appliances to work.  How cool would it be to do a small load of laundry while you cook dinner?

I'll try and acquire matching appliances and keep those in the garage for parts.  My old parts fridge currently doubles as a tool chest. I'm sure I'll find someway to justify my other parts appliances : )
