I'd love to stop political phone calls, but if you read the fine print on the "stop political calls" site, they admit that compliance on the part of the politicians is completely voluntary, and that no politician as yet has pledged to honor the do not call registry. In addition, political campaigns will be charged $17,000 just to get a copy of the do not call list. Frankly I don't see any motive on the part of the campaigns to honor the pledge, let alone ante up $17,000 to find out who they're not supposed to call.
Unfortunately I also think it's very unlikely that our elected representatives will expand the national do not call list to include political campaigns. They will justify this refusal by saying that they need to stay in contact with their constituencies. Which of course, is BS.
I made the mistake in the 2004 campaign period of going down to my local party HQ and putting my phone number down on a contact form. Since then I've been deluged with phone calls and messages prior to each election. It got so bad that I shut off my answering machine and when I was home, I hung up the phone immediately if I detected the telltale signs of a calling center on the other end (long pause before someone speaks, sounds of other conversations in the background, etc). I'd love to see a federally mandated national political do not call list, but I suspect we're stuck with these types of calls for some time to come.
However, I am thinking that I might visit the same campaign HQ this winter and tell them to take me off all their lists - because of the phone calls. If the calls continue, I'll tell them that as a result I'll vote for their opposition in the general election.
