Hope all awg members are safe and inland. Hanna was enough for me all the way up here. We recieved 6.5 inches of rain from that storm in 6 hours. 2 days later another 4 inches and tuesday another 2 inches. We have surpassed our yearly total for percipitation 2 months ago. How are you guys in the atlanta area doing. Has the lake refilled from the storms?
Jon

It looked to me like Hanna missed Georgia almost completely.

Here's hoping all AW members in Ike's path have battened down the hatches or headed out of harms way.

People are already going nuts.

Stores are jam packed. I just had to get a bag of dog food and there was this guy with 50, yes 50 cans of Vienna Sausages. Another woman had 3 cases, yes cases of tuna fish in her cart. And another woman had 12 bags of charcoal in her cart. What's wrong with these people? Don't they have any considerations for others? You know the day after the storm they are going to bring all this stuff back for refunds.

What we do is each time we go shopping we buy an extra storm good or two. Then when a storm comes we have what we need. If a storm doesn't come that year we just use the stuff up and start again in the spring. It's only common sense. But there are people who wait until the very last minute and get stuck in traffic, desamate the shelves at the store, etc. We've had two false alarms this year, there should be NO REASON for people to go through this panic. Don't they know how to pay
attention?

On the television news they were talking about disabled people who need to be picked up and carried away to shelters. They are told they have to be ready when the bus comes by their house to pick them up. What are the bus drivers hearing today?

Person to be picked up: Why you here? What you want?

Bus Driver: I am here to pick you up and take you to a safe shelter, are you ready to go?

Person: But it's nice and sunny outside. We don't need to go yet.

Bus Driver: that's the point, we are getting you out while it is still safe.

Person: Well, then come back and get me when the storm comes.

Bus Driver: I can't do that.

Person: than what good are you?

The newscaster said that these are going to be the people who will be calling 911 during the middle of the storm complaining that their roof was blown off and can somebody please come and rescue them. The police and Coast Guard have already stated that no rescues will take place during the storm. They will start rescuing people afterwards.

Allen, people like that are everywhere. You can't get away from them. Well, maybe in Singapore.

buckel down .....

all you Texans, you're going to get to ride that bronco again.

People from the south of Houston/NASA outskirts started arriving here yesterday afternoon. I think whre 58Limited is, their county is to evacuate to my county. I will still have tropical force to hurricane force winds and rain Saturday, but it keeps changing ever 5 hours as to what to expect. Because we only have 2 grocery stores and Wally World, I hit the store yesterday on my way home. I already knew what I needed, but the store brands werre almost all out and I don't like national brand pricing in comparison. The wheat bread I usually buy was already gone so I had to get a more expensive brand. So I am set. I could lose power for a few days due to the winds. Will fill up my car tomorrow on the way to work.

Houston! We have a problem!!!

Just had to say that! Hope you guys down there are getting out safely!

I hope

everyone comes through this ok.
Seems Mother Nature did not get the republican message that global warming and increasingly fierce storms was just a myth.
In all seriousness, I remember when I asked after Katrina where my money would do the most good, I was told that there were several small towns in Texas that had taken in refugees and could use the help. I sure hope the Texans kindness will be repaid.
Actually, I hope it all just turns around and blows back to sea.

Atlanta is

still in a dry spell.

Middle Georgia is not.

We had plenty of rain last weekend. I fell asleep watching the rain pour in Sparta. I sat on the piazza watching the rain until I was fighting sleep. It was beautiful.

Atlanta needs the rain very much. Lake Lanier is still far below where it should be. All of north Georgia is still in need of rain.

I hope the storms do not do much damage to the coast but still brings rains inward.

My best wishes---

and prayers that everyone in the storm's projected path comes through safely!

Please keep us all as informed as possible!

Well, my county is under a mandatory evac. The winds are not supposed to be above 100mph here and I was going to stay. But this is a huge storm and they are saying my area will get a significant storm surge. They announced at 9:30 that the surge could be over 20 feet - this category two storm has a category four surge, and the seawall behind my house is 16 feet.

I'll be hitting the road tomorrow morning with four dogs and ten cats - some mine, some strays from the clinic. I'm going to a friend's house 40 miles north, above the surge zone, then I'll come right back after the worst of the storm passes - if the surge doesn't overflow the seawall that is.

maniacs on the roads

I whitnessed a deadly accident today.I rode down to H.E.B to get vacuum cleaner bags(I am always ready for a hurricane)and this ass hole, woman cut this kid on a bike off and ran over him!She was in such a hurry to take an available parking spot that she had no comon curtacy for this kid.He was air lifted but pronounced dead on arival.I had to give a report to the police on what I saw and told them that if I myself wasn't a defensive biker,I'd be dead too.I do not ride on the sidewalk. It is illegal and there are signs all along the roads saying "share the road".Unfortunately, most auto drivers don't care and are too busy searching for gold up their nose with that handy index finger to even read a sign.Even if it was legal to bike on sidewalks, most car drivers come out the side roads non-stop and cut you off.Nobody ever stops at stop signs unless there's trafic keeping them from being able to just pull out.Fortunately, the officers arrested this driver and she'll be tried for man slaughter.

...actually, big storms are caused by cool atmosphere, and warm waters. The water evaporates out of the ocean. The warm, moist air rises into the atmosphere where it encounters cool air. Blammo! it condenses to form....Yep, that's right, rain!!! The bigger the temperature differential, the more convection, and the bigger the storm. It's the basic laws of physics, and has nothing to do with our favorite scapegoat...global warming

Typically, when we have cool summers, we get big storms. This past summer has been a little bit cooler than the past two (when we didn't get any big hurricanes).

Yes, I believe that the earth is warming some, but if it's being caused by human activity or not is highly doubtable, especially when one considers other variables that can affect global temperature, like the our orbit around the sun, which can vary by several hundred miles in either direction, the temperature of the sun, which isn't stable either, then there's volcanic and geothermal activity....the list goes on! Now, I'm not saying that this is a free pass to go waste all the energy and pollute all you want, because there are other problems that are caused by reckless consumption and pollution, especially with health!

Texans, please post when you can. Im checking TWC out of habit. IKE IS look'n Fierce. Be safe. alr2903

Well, I swapped trips with a few friends so I can be home for this.
Preparations made today:
Reinforced our wooden fence with long deck screws rather than nails.
Pulled in the sprinklers and hoses
Cleaned the glass on our gas lantern, it may be the only light on our block for awhile, so I want it to shine brightly
Put our ice maker on full blast filling up an ice chest.
Made arrangements with our neighbor to hook up our generator to our house in the morning. We probably won't turn it on until the storm passes. It's 4,000W, enough to run a room a/c (which we don't have), a television, ceiling fans,a few lights and the refrigerator. BTW, right after a hurricane comes by, it gets VERY hot! So we are bracing. All the stores said that this is the close-out season for a/c units and they are now stocking up on heaters for the winter, so don't expect to see any more a/c units. The power company said that we may not have power for up to 18 days.
Now I was in Houston for Hurricane Alicia back in 83'. These storms are unbelievable. The noise of the wind roaring outside your home is the scariest part of it. You can actually feel your house shake! Our area is susposed to get 80mph continuous wind. What happens is that this wind will blow for 4 or 5 hours, then it will stop for the eye to go over. Then it blows just as hard in the opposite direction for another 4 or 5 hours. Whatever is weakened by the first blast is usually blown away on the second blast.
We have three animal "guests" from the animal shelter staying with us for the storm. A couple of 6 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback pups and a big old friendly Rottweiler. The shelter building is made out of prefab steel and they are worried that it may blow away. Plus there are no windows. If they lose power the animals may bake to death in the heat in there. It's normally air conditioned. There are 423 animals currently in the shelter. Everyone who works there have taken some home with them. So we now have 7 dogs in the house with us. It'll be cozy.
The fun is supposed to start early tomorrow morning and last until mid day Sunday. I'll keep you updated as I can.

Dave:

Best of luck to you! I know it was a mess loading everyone up, including the cats! Cat's don't usually travel well, do they?

thousands are already here

The hospitals are full++

We worked until 10 last night and started at 4 this am.
All the hotels are full and most all the shelters too. Hundreds are sleeping in cars in the parks..People are "attacking" the food stores too. Already a real mess.

Please know that all of you in the effected area are in my thoughts and prayers. Please take care and be safe!! Terry

We're catching Ike here

We have gotten almost 10 inches of rain overnight. Now remember in flat ole Kansas a backed up toliet will cause trouble. They are dismissing schools, there is water 2ft over some of the roads out west of town, and there are 1,000 stranded in Winfield at the fairgrounds bluegrass festival.

Well, this morning was a nice morning. Kind of humid. Winds are about 10 mph. Karen and I took ALL the dogs to the dog park this morning and ran their little legs off with Frisbee and ball for three hours. Everyone is now pooped out. We dont' want a house full of wild ass dogs during the storm.
It's cloudy out. I suspect that we won't see anything here till maybe 10pm tonight. We have a very large walk in closet in the center of the house and we put airm atresses and dog beds in there. If it gets too bad, we'll go in there.
The National Weather service has reduced the estimated winds for my area from 80pmh to 40-60mph. Hopefully, it won't be too bad.
Here is a great website to monitor the storm on. Everything is on one page. The viewing options are on the top of the page. It contains the latest information.

Houston local CBS Ch 11 is feeding through Ch 361 on DirecTV if anybody out there wants to have a look at what's happening in Galveston.

Panthera, you make a good point about during katrina that alot of the help needed was actually in Texas to run the shelters filled to capacity with Louisiana folks. Well, you can bet your bottom dollar that we Louisiana folk will ALWAYS be there for our Texas neighbors. they are there for us and don't forget that we in Louisiana are gonna get hit pretty good with the Eastern side of IKE. I live so far north in the state that I'm almost to the Arkansas line but we are in the wake of a lot of wind and possible power outages here as well. My town was inundated by evacs during the Gustav storm so we are always ready.

Maybe all the Katrina refugees who set up home in Houston will go back to New Orleans to be safe!

Good luck to all the Houstonites...

Here it is 3:13PM.The skies are overcast and there is a constant breeze around 10 MPH.Forty(40)percent of Galvestonians STAYED HOME!!!! They're sure to die!The water began rising this morning and hasn't stopped since! Some areas 4'!The hurricane doesn't hit till 1AM,saturday!According to chanel 13,the storm is currently strengthining in the Gulf!

Well, there was this guy in Surfside who has a house right on the Gulf. His friends pleaded with him to leave, but he said he wasn't. He was going to sit on his porch and drink a beer.
Well, his house is now a long, long way from the shoreline and the posts his house are built on are eroding. His friends are text messaging with him. You guessed, he now wants somebody to come and rescue him. Coast Guard said "No buddy, you had your chance. We are not going to risk ourselves to save you!".
So far up here, no action yet. We are going to take a nap so we can be awake and aware tonight!
