Cleaning out my Mom's house she has a stove and fridge in an apartment in the basement that from what I remember belonged to my Grandmother. I know they both work and she used to use the stove to do alot of canning on and I remember her doing country hams in the oven for holidays some years ago and keeping overflow food in the fridge. It has been unpluged and the door ajar for at least 5 years. Thats how long it has been since she was able to go downstairs. My question is... I have rented the house and should I leave them down there for the tenants or should I take them out. I don't have any place to keep them and would most likely have to sell them. The main kitchen has all new modern appliances... within the past 6 years she put in all Maytag.. dishwasher, smooth 5 burner cook top, double wall oven with convection and double door fridge.

Wow, nice appliances, they look so pristine, I would hate to have tenants treat them the way so many tenants do... plus, tenants would probably be happier with something newer even if not as nice and not top end! My vote is to save them!

Save them!!

90% of tenants dont even take good care of new appliances. They will likely view these as "just old junk" and treat them badly. They wont be nearly as pristine after the tenants move out, I can almost promise you.

I agree that you cannot entrust either stove or fridge to the average tenant(s).  The stove will be broken in no time flat and the freon will escape via ice pick -- that is if they even bother to defrost the fridge ever.

Keep in mind that we here on AW are a relatively tiny group of individuals who appreciate old appliances.  There are legions of people out there who would consider both stove and fridge to be sub-par junk.

I hope someone here can help save these impeccably clean pieces.  That fridge is a true classic, as in the retro world's cliche model for the period.

Hey Hon!,

These are historical pieces. Frigidaire pioneered the 30 inch ranges and this one's the great granddaddy of the well known, well liked RSE36S from the 70's.How much would you want to sell them for?

I grew up in B 'more and worked at Epstein's so I just had to say "hon" hon! lol

My uncle still has a range very similar to yours, it's from 1954. Everything on it still works, even the clock and timer. His wife once lost a burner support when she cleaned it. I gave them another one a few years ago and took a picture of it that day!

Uh,

I've been a tenant since 1996, and I have treated the appliances provided by management well, unless, as in the case here, (this current place of mine) they were beyond saving, anyway.

Yes, some tenants ARE horrid, but not all of us, thankyouverymuch.

(Might I suggest gay tenants?)

Incidentally, the stove and fridge are lovely!

speaking as a landlord...

I'd have to say you are far, far above average. I've had more appliances ruined, even stolen, than you can shake a stick at!

Fridge!

My parents started housekeeping with that same fridge and a slightly earlier version of the range, the fridge is a 1950, that stove a 53 or 54.

Thanks for all the comments

After I read all of your comments I have to say I had reservations about leaving them. The guy that I have rented the house to is very cool. His parents are the neighbor across the street and were very good friends with my parents for the past 30 years. I talked to him about my concern for the appliances and he has assured me that he has no intention of even using them since they are in a basement kitchen. He and his wife really don't need to use them at all. I told him that if he really did need to have appliances down stairs to let me know and I would replace them with more modern ones. He knows that they belonged belonged to my grandparents and I really value them.

I wish I would have know there was this much interest in them on here before. I am doing a 1 year lease with him and with them just being "stored" there I will decide if I want to part with them then. At least I know I can find a very good home for them here! I wish I had a place to put them at my house but I don't.

Thank you guys so much for the suport and comments.

Sounds like you have it under control

It's always a gamble for a good landlord, AND a good tenet, when first renting.
The good tenet might wind up with a horrible slum lord! (Watch Judge Judy)

Both need to "vet" each other as well as they can! And it sounds like you did, since you know his parents ect.
