Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

These were the 'grand prize' on a couple of Canadian TV Quiz shows in the 70s; usually the prizes were pretty lame (I know people who won a couple of boxes of Z-Brick...eeesh!!)

I always thought the concept was neat but never got to actually get close enough to one to use it.

Still it harkens back to the James portable dishwasher that slipped into the cabinet of a gas range.   Was it Universal that had that feature??

Yes, a model of the Universal gas range could house the James.

The MM Cook 'n Clean Center could have a better dishwasher installed under it so long as it had a metal tank. The ovens in these were huge with more clearance over the cooktop than most high-oven ranges making these very tall with the vent hood on top.

Never even heard of this set-up. One would think they'd be popular in cities esp as the oven is so large.... If it had gas burners I'd be interested. Not likely, right?

Called "The range that washes dishes", Modern Maid introduced these back in the mid to late sixties when they, along with Speed Queen, were with McGraw /Edison. They were later purchased by Raytheon along with Amana. You could buy the oven/cooktop separate from the dishwasher too. Like the Flairs. The major issues I saw were mostly rat and/or mouse and/or roach infestation in the oven and dishwasher insolation. The stench was horrible when you'd go to use the oven and cockroaches would come out in the hundreds as the dishwasher got hotter. They should have designed them a bit more carefully.

for small kitchens...

The condo we bought in '90 had this. Overall, performance was v.g. DW was typical early 60's LOUD, but with careful loading n HOT water it got dishes clean. When condos were being flipped in the mid 2000s folks were replacing with standalone appliances...
