Strange butter keeper??

It looks like it should reside inside a refrigerator with that type face on it.
It probably is a unit designed to keep butter soft enough to cut easily. With a cord, I would say it is designed to be used outside of a refrigerator.
 
I've never seen one of these.

Although the name Servel, Inc. was an appliance manufacturer. I know they made gas powered refrigerators, but that's really all I've seen by that brand.

I'm not sure about Servel,

but my International Harvester has a butter keeper with a similar thermostat. Butter is hard to spread when kept very cold, one kept it somewhat more spreadable in the butter keeper.
 
Our GE 18.8 Spacemaker has a butter compartment in the door with sort, medium and hard settings. Your is from an earlier era. I found one like it a few years back. It is a beautifully made artifact, now perfect for sitting on a desk to store treasures. You could even put them in a butter dish for easier removal.
