Hello guys!

Yesterday we had some trouble with one of our dishwashers in a lessonkitchen at school. When the schooltechnician came around and pulled it out of the cabinet, I was a strange 'part' mounted on the side of the tub. He said that it's called a 'water matrix' but had no idea what it actually does. Can someone help to solve this little 'what is the purpose of that part of a dishwasher'?

All our dishwashers are Mieles G665SC (see pic below, it's not mine my camera was not around...)

I don't have this exact model but I have the G2830. It has something called the water path which may be similar to the matrix. On mine this is a flat plastic container that spans almost the entire top to bottom of the left side of the machine. It is has several electronic wire connections running to it.

Incoming water flows into it and it measures the amount of water entering the machine and the water hardness and then directs the water through the water softener or by passes the softener so that the water does not get too soft depending on the program you are using. The normal cycle does not use this softener by pass process, maybe because the water temp is never heated over 130F or in my machine it never makes it over 120F if I decide to use the Normal program(I actually never use it because it disables most of the sensor functions on the machine). The water softener resin is at the bottom of the part. The water path also controls the softener regeneration process which sends the water though the salt container and through the resin flushing it with salt water and then sends it down the drain. Softened water enters the machine from the sump, non softened water spills into the machine from the left side of the tub.
