Folks, a request:  My washer is making a strange grinding noise.  I've had the guys out to look at it; they replaced the motor.  (I was thinking struts).  Well, the motor was not as good as it should have been and the new one IS working better.  But it is still..grinding.

This is a whirlpool front loader (sorry don't remember the model).  I've attached a sound file that demonstrates the noise (if you can differentiate).

Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks!

[followup:  my .m4a file didn't upload.  If someone is kind enough to want to review it, I'll email it to you as I don't have a publicly accessible file folder.]

it's actually when the machine is agitating.

it's when the machine is agitating, not filling or emptying.

When I had my KitchenAid front loaders, a friend's bra strap got caught inbetween the inner and outer tubs. It took a few loads to loosen it enough and it eventually broke down into small particles that went into the button catcher where I was able to remove it. It sounds to me like you have something either caught inbetween the tubs or something like a screw stuck in one of the tub perferations.I would get a flashlight and check all the holes in the tub first.

if this happens to me in a few years from now

if ever this happens to me in a few years from now for me in my case i would buy a brand new washer dryer set as it would be a better option than a repair and a better option for me as well but it might be a top load washer as front loaders are way out of my price range.

In my Haynes manual it says that ...

-It could be the bearings
-The motor brushes
-damage to the drum

They replaced the motor

They did replace the motor and it works MUCH better than before.

Damage to the drum is possible.

NOISEY WASHER

The drum, spider, bearings & water seal have no connection to the motor on a WP FL washer and problems with these items will not cause motor problems [ unless water is leaking from the main shaft area on the motor ] so you could have a separate problem. To everyone it is very difficult to diagnose problems on the internet and much more so if you don't give out the model and serial #s thanks.

If the grinding

Is most pronounced at the start of the drum revolving, it could possibly be a worn or damaged belt, which would be very cheap and easy to replace.

Grinding noise

Perhaps not necessarily grinding, but I've know them to make a sort of scraping noise.
