The Penta-Vane on my working 1980s Kenmore 60 Series slips occasionally as it agitates. It makes a loud clicking sound as it slips. I have no repair experience but would like to fix it myself. What's the problem and how can I repair it? How do I get the agitator off the drive shaft? I tried lifting it but it won't budge. I read that possibly it's stuck on the shaft splines? Or maybe it's the transmission that slipping? The main problem for now is how do I remove the Penta-Vane agitator?

Stuck Agitator

Hi John, you can try slowly pooring a gallon or two of boiling water over the top of the agitator and then pulling it off, but you may need to use and agitator puller to get off.

The slipping during agitation is most likley a transmission problem, likely caused by water in the transmission, if so the washer needs a heavy rebuild if you want to get much more use out of it. You can contact me with your phone# if you want more details of what needs to be done.

Yup, it sounds like a transmission problem to me. If so, there's no need for me to pull off the agitator. I need to decide whether to find a pro and put $$ into this 33 y.o. washer to keep it going. Thanks.
