Well, I followed everybody's suggestions and then I took a hammer, pretended I was like Steve's repairman friend and whacked the top of the agitator a couple of times (after succumbing to frustration), yanked and:

Thanks to Filter-Flo; he posted pictures of his old Hotpoint a while back with a Duo-Load agitator retro-fitted into it and that gave me this mission

Still, I'm on suds-cake 9; I'm lovin' this. If anybody out there has any literature on the innards of the fountain-filter agitator I'd love to see it. There's an old Hotpoint dealer up in Torrington and I'm going to pay him a visit soon to see if by any stretch of luck he's got some old parts.
I found some old threads on this site that talked about spin problems that Robert thought were caused by tub brake malfunctions and I think that's what's happening with this machine. When it comes to the last spin, you can hear the motor/pump engage and run, but the only thing that happens is the agitator oscillates very slowly. It's much worse on GENTLE speed, the tub seems to lock up as well. If I grab the tub ring and send it on its way, it winds up to a full spin, but only on NORMAL SPEED. On GENTLE, the tub seizes over and over again. This machine in its present condition will not be a daily driver, but I'm still so happy to have her in my collection. Even with the overflow rinse, this solid tub machine doesn't use all that much water especially compared to a perforated Filter-Flo. And the rinse cycle with the overflow is wonderfully long and thorough. I like the simplicity of this machine.
I'm still amazed that a 1970's NOS agitator would fit in a 1962 "standard capacity" model. I guess Hotpoint's 14, then 15, then16-pound capacity claims were as much hooey as GE's V-12, then V-14, then V-16 chaserei.

Yeah, those things that look like rust stains are actually wood chips left from the shims I tried to hammer underneath the agitator. The agitator post is pristine; the "pot metal" agitator spline is somewhat corroded (and the only #$%^&@*$#$(!) thing that was holding it down. I looked up inside the OE bakelite agitator after it popped off and could see absolutely NOTHING that would account for how hard it was holding on. I'm glad I could save it, but even though it made decent rollover and washing action , it cannot hold a candle to what the spiral ramp thing does. Especially with that Hotpoint 212 degree arc.

Way to Go, Baja, I think it was just meant to be, the turquoise on the control panel and the turq. agitator appear on my monitor as a spot on match. I hope you find your parts to make your filter work, but till then you have the overflow rinse. IMHO the greatest feature ever. arthur

Sounds to me like you've been duped by another brochure! ;-) Seeing that spiral agitator at work in my machine with a full load, I could fully understand the less-than mediocre ratings bestowed upon it by CR. But enough bubble popping...
To make the filter work properly, you'll need the rest of the bits inside the agitator and there is a rubber gasket that goes into the tub. You have to remove the tub from the machine, or so I'm told. I have the complete agitator for the Fountain Filter but not the gasket.

Ken these earlier Co-axial machines do not have a spin tub brake, only a brake that tries to prevent the tub from indexing during agitation. My first guess is that the clutch shoes are worn down and need replacing. That is what I had to do to my 1963 Hotpoint (the one that Greg has now) when I first got it, it would hardly spin. Larry at Modern had a brand new set of shoes. You could always repad the old shoes if necessary.
The reason the filter doesn't work is not only is it missing parts but there is a rubber grommet at the bottom of the tub needs to engage the filter parts. I think Larry still might have some of those newer style filter agitator grommets. Of course you need to find the rest of the filter parts as well.
