Sunbeam Mixmaster question

Hi All:
I have a Sunbeam Mixmaster question, when mixing my mixmaster 1955 is getting so hot you can't touch the body!
Is this normal, I don't think so. Does anyone have experience with this?

Hmmm...

Sounds like you have a motor issue. I wonder if you can take an ohm meter and check the resistance to ground, unplugged of course. You may have a slight short. Or check the amps that it is drawing while running.

You probably need to locate a member with a similar model to repeat the test and compare results.

I forgot to ask, what are you mixing? How much resistance is being placed on the machine by the density of the mixture? How long is the run time? If left running, would your mixer trip on overload?

The body gets really hot!

Also can cause this problem, as can bad bearings, stiff lube, foreign material flowed into housing.

One of the brushes fixing to die is listed as a source of intemperate heat on many diagnostic charts for other fractional horsepower motors...

But, yes, a short or bad cap. would be my first guess.

My model 11 does the same thing. I oil it but have not checked anything else. I usually mix a fairly stiff batter with it, so I was assuming it got hot due to a heavy load on the motor.

Hi Jon, if the capacitor is defective usually they will only run at full speed.

depending on the model and the intended market.

Capacitors have various uses in fractional horsepower motors.
They can serve as passive PF correctives (and are quite good, really).
They can 'help' the motor start under weak voltage conditions or under load.
They can suppress radio frequency interference.
They can reduce uneven wear on certain contact parts of the motor and governor in some mixers under some specific currents.

So, yup, it will have at least one capacitor.

What is the purpose of the resistor?

If I know Mixmasters have a resistor and a condenser linked in the speed(governor)control. I thought the condenser is supposed to eliminate radio and television interference. Does the resistor prolong the life of the governor and promote smoother operation, especially at low speeds? If a mixer motor is getting hot mixing muffin batter (short mixing period at low speed). There is definitely a problem: needing lubrication, bearing about to fail are my first thoughts. Is the heat throughout the mixer body and seems to be hotter in the middle, near the speed control, or the front of the mixer. When the motor runs at a moderate to high speed, is air flow felt coming out of the vents in the Mix-finder dial? Model 11 Mixmasters were known for having bearing failures. That is one reason for their suspected short production run from 1955 to 1957.

I have a few things to check thank you for the info! I did not know this model had bearing problems. Those are easily corrected. But it seems to get hot first right in the middle under the decal.
I can't believe the decal hasn't melted off yet.
Is the speed governer located there, and does anyone have schematics or repair manuals for an 11??

If you are wondering why the decal hasn't melted yet. I suspect something is causing the motor work harder than necessary due to lubrication needed or a bearing about to fail. The speed control is near the rear of the motor housing. The resistor and condenser are inside the Mixfinder dial. Have you checked to motor brushes?if they are less than 1/4 long, they should be replaced. Dave Harnash has an excellent CD about the repair of Mixmasters taken from the original service manuals. He sells a CD covering models 1-3, 5-9, 10-12 and Model J.

Spindles

The model 11 is prone to spindle failure. If they are not kept lubed they can really put a load on the motor prior to seizure. Be sure to put copious amounts of oil into the key slot under the handle and wash down the sides of the juicer port. Let it set over night and then squit the oil port by the decal and make sure to use a small tube to force oil down the oil port just in front of the Mixfinder. It should be just fine. Warmth and even hot is normal under a heavy load and after running more than minutes. If the armature can spin fast enough to move the fan the switch is air cooled.

I will lube however I did just download and print out the 11C manual from Dave Harnish. Excellent quality scan there so I now have my bedtime reading ahead of me.
