Sunbeam portable clothes dryer / belts

Recently picked up a new/unused Sunbeam portable clothes dryer. I'm sure y'all know the piece. Mid-sixties tabletop unit.
Works fine except the belts are egg-shaped. Would like to reshape the belts. Any tips on softening the belts so they return closer to their original round shape?

I suspect, at this point, it isn't possible. But what do I know?
Suggestion: If you haven't already, post this in the Imperial section. It fits Robert's definition of what goes there and an awful lot of very knowledgeable people read that section but don't play in the sandbox.
Can't say as I blame them...
