Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Sunlight is very much still around - at least down South. I can go to my local schnucks store or Wal-Mart and purchase this product.

Also, sunlight is very popular in Canada as a hand dishwashing liquid and laundry detergent. I don't believe the two products are at all related.

Sunlight

Sunlight is owned by Phoenix brands. The owners of Final Touch,Ajax,Fab,Dynamo..etc. Sunlight was a Colgate-Palmolive brand originally.LaundryShark- Sunlight is widely available here in FL. if you need some, I would be happy to send.

Phoenix Brands LLC

If I don't find Sunlight Dishwashing stuff locally, I'll take you up on your offer at last resort. Meantime, The PhoenixBrandsLLC.com site is still under construction, but was able to contact the company through its RitDye.com Web page. Also, I see the Colgate.com site is still up and running with whatever products they still carry.--Laundry Shark

Sunlight was a Unilever brand. Sunlight household bar soap was one of Unilever's flagship brands in England, originating in the late 19th century. It was also a very popular washing-up liquid in Britain, second only to Fairy. They brought the brand to the US in 1980 or so. Then it was advertised as having real lemon juice and seemed to be the same formula as that sold in the UK. A formula change in the early nineties did away with the lemon juice and in my opinion the quality also. It was sold to Phoenix 4 or 5 years ago.

Wikepedia

I guess you read Wikepedia too Todd..I stand corrected..Unilever formally owned Sunlight. Not Colgate-Palmolive.

Sunlight...dimmed but not out yet

Sunlight was originally a Unilever brand...and when the dishwashing liquid was introduced in the states in 1982, there were a number of reports of people mistaking the yellow bottle (with "REAL LEMON JUICE" displayed prominently on the label) for, well, real lemon juice ... and getting sick after dribbling it in tea, on fish, on salads, etc.

While a Unilever spokesman pointed out you'd have to drown in the dishwashing liquid before you'd die of detergent poisoning, the company revised the label shortly thereafter.

The Sunlight dishwasher detergent by none other than Vanna White in the mid 1980's, but soon got overwhelmed by other brands.

At one point before Unilever sold Sunlight to Phoenix Brands, Unilever discontinued Dove dishwashing liquid (a/k/a Dove-for-Dishes) and renamed it Sunlight...

I've seen the new Sunlight packages in some stores, in white, lemon and pink grapefruit varieties...

Oops, I must have drunk some Sunlight just now!

Couple of corrections on my earlier post...Vanna White introduced the Sunlight automatic dishwasher detergent (I left out the verb earlier!)

...

and you're right that the lemon juice was ultimately removed in the early '90s, and Sunlight didn't clean as well as did after that! Sunlight was my favorite brand of dish liquid for several years, but I switched to Ajax Lemon (which still contained lemon juice at the time) shortly thereafter. Right now, NO dishwashing liquid sold stateside contains any lemon juice...
