AEG has

a wonderful silverware basket, that is true.
Makes it much easier to take things out.
My first Miele had something similar.

I didn't like the upper drawer thing-y which came with my Miele at all and was glad to be able to trade it and the lower rack for the normal lower rack and basket.

Guess it is all just a matter of how you do things.

What scares me worse than knives is a drinking glass breaking in the machine and you don't see it - I tend to put dishes away first thing in the morning whilst the coffee is brewing and am so not paying attention.

I learned about in working as a dishwasher in restaurants and hospitals was that many (up to 70%)people DO NOT WASH THEIR HANDS AFTER GOING TO THE BATHROOM,SNEEZING,WIPING THEIR EYES,NOSE OR MOUTH, OR CAUGHING IN THEM.When unloading the silerware,it is better that the end that goes in one's mouth not be touched during unloading and putting it away.That helps to keep the spread of germs down to a minimum and wearing rubber gloves helps too.

And that 70% is right on. Worked as a dishwasher then salad chef in an upscale restaurant during my college days.

Our evening chef would just crucify anyone who came out of the bathroom with dry hands and no sound of running water. The day chef could not have cared less.

Scary.

I also learned to always be nice to your waiter and waitress, not to mention the bus boy. The stuff they do to your food and drink if they don't like you is very much exactly what you'd think it is.

I have such a silverware basket and I hate it! I have had several times that a knife comes between the sides of the basket and sticks through it. When you push the lower rack back in the knife stops the lower rack where the knife hits the side of the dishwasher. And then the basket is crooked again until you bend it back into shape again...

Handles down.

Not only because of space issues in the cutlery basket, but I think it has to do with the way the spray jets fan out the further away you get from the spray arm holes. This would mean that there is an optimum cleansing position in the baskets.

All knives handles up. Forks and spoons handles down apart from a few tea spoons we have which have to go handles up because the handles fall through the gaps in the basket and stop the arm.

Handles up and sorted

The GE has that funky silverware thing with six sections. Since we use spoons alot (for coffee and feeding the cats), 4 of them are devoted to spoons. The other one is for forks and the other for knives. It all evens out in the end.

Ah, but what if you have a spin-tube DW?

We generally put the handles down in the spin-tube, except for steak knives, for safety. Must mingle different pieces so they don't nest.
