Sweet and Sour Chicken

This is a must-try

I like cooking off the stove so this would be fun to prepare at my kitchen island while my dinner guests are slurping up cocktails. Costco sells rotisserie chicken white meat in a container which is perfect for this. Plus now I have an excuse to wear that Asian kimono I bought at Epcot.

I did have a difficult time watching the video. I got so dizzy I had to hold on to the desk chair to keep from falling over. What's with all the moving and swerving with the camera? Did Ralph fall off the wagon again? It might be wise to check the level on the cooking sherry bottle. [this post was last edited: 8/16/2014-16:46]

Thanks All!

Michigan blueberries are in full swing and I think this is a particularly good year for them - eating them by the handfuls (they are supposed to be good for you, but they just taste incredible).

JOE - Ha! When I editing this episode I asked the same question! Ralph gets quite excitable around food, and is distracted by the anticipation of dinner. Oh, if it were only the cooking sherry he was nipping at - just my luck he only drinks the expensive stuff!

That Costco chicken is wonderful and would be perfect for this dish. I LOVE using the electric skillet - probably my favorite small appliance (next to the coffee pot).

Yum, YUM, YUMMY!

Kevin,

I made this dish tonight and it is VERY Good.  Thank you for sharing the recipe.  This recipe is everything I love, it's easy, tasty and most of all I get to use one of my vintage appliances!  I had an habanero pepper in the frig so I used that.  Gave it a real nice kick.

Thank you.

Chach!

I want to have dinner at your house! Looks great - so glad you enjoyed the recipe.

That pink Sunbeam skillet is incredible - I've heard tell of them but have yet to see one...so glad you had a chance to put it into service!

Those are really great pics Ralph. Pink's not my color but the vintage electric pan is wonderful. The red chopsticks and pink fry-pan-matching plate are a nice touch. Where's the fortune cookie?

I know right!

Don't think I didn't secretly wish I had a fortune cookie hanging around somewhere to complete the look.  LOL!

As far as the pink goes - I think I am secretly still wishing to find a house with an all pink 50's kitchen someday and I'm picking up the accessories now as I find them.  That poor thing was in really bad shape when I found it.  It looked like it had fried it's share of chicken.  I cleaned up the cooked on grease as best I could.  It really is a little small for that recipe so next time I'll do it on the stove but it sure was fun to use it.

Making this tonight too. I think I will cut a little of the pineapple flavor by using that new Swanson Sweet & Sour chicken broth. I've cooked rice with these flavored broths before and they are great. Unfortunately my electric frypan is not vintage. I hope I don't spill anything on my kimono. I look like Richard Chamberlin from "Shogun" in it...give or take another 100 pounds.[this post was last edited: 8/21/2014-13:57]

I failed miserably. Attempt # 1 had chunks of carmelized brown sugar like pieces of candy (new package of sugar & pan was not that hot)...dumped. Attempt # 2 had clumps of corn starch (package was brand new)...dumped. Fortunately I kept the vegetables, pineapple and chicken separate and ended up cooking them with teriyaki sauce. I should stick to those red boxes in the freezer section that say Stouffer's."

The haboob we had shortly before my disaster should have been a warning...

Kevin, went to Cavalcade of Food to get the recipe and it was not there....  I like to save stuff to the computer and pull it up in the kitchen when I go to make it.

I guess I'll have to rewatch the video and write down the recipe, no big deal.

Made this tonight!

It was fantastic! Thanks so much for posting this. It's pretty screw-proof too. I went out of order on a few of the steps but it still came out wonderful. And, there's plenty of it left over for a whole 'nother meal.

One word of caution everyone...

You may think you've blown on those pineapple chunks enough to cool 'em down, and yet....

Mike - yours looked dee-lish! Glad it came out well...I think the cherries will add some fun to the dish (and a little extra sweet)

Joe - sorry for the haboob and the recipe disaster. Order the #14 at your local Chinese place instead ;-)

Matt - the written recipe isn't up yet - I'm miles behind on getting many of them online, so you may have to watch and write (I'm a teacher in real life so I guess I've gotten used to just taking notes!).

Rick - glad to hear yours turned out well and the recipe does make a lot! Doesn't the pineapple taste good when it is hot?

Thanks to all!

Kevin-

That looks so much better than what we get in restaurants here for s/s chix. Here they coat strips of chicken in a thick, heavy batter and deep fry them- chicken fingers. Then dump an almost neon red cherry s/s sauce on them or serve it on the side for takeout. No veggies either! Yuck!

This pic is the closest I could find to what we get.

Chuck
