I have a pot luck to attend tomorrow night and having been years since I made sweet and sour meatballs I figured why not. Plus I got to play with the Electromatic Skillet which always adds a little fun factor. I'm even going to take it to the party tomorrow to add a little zing LOL

January 3 seems to be North American Potluck Night!

For me, it is Book Group.

I am taking a rice pilaf from scratch....rice, butter, chicken broth, shallots, fresh mushroom, a red bell pepper.

I'm making it tomorrow in an Avocado Baycraft electric skillet....which someone nice sent from Canada.

If I had a digicam, I'd take a snap...

The book is an extremely funny family comedy, called The Spellman Files, by Lisa Lutz. A mother, father, and three children (two adult children). The mother, father, and the daughters (28 years old, and 14) are private investigators. The 30 year old son is a lawyer. If you liked the movie "The Royal Tenenbaums," you might also like The Spellman Files."

And yes, I am leading the discussion, because I suggested the book.

Mixed group, though more women than men. I'm the only one of "a certain nature", alas.

It's a good time, though.

We had a CWA (Country Womens Association) birthday theme a few months back.

People were given a recipe out of the CWA cookbook to bring along. I scored exactly what you have cooked!

...and it went down well along with the Tuna bake, devils on horseback etc

Looks delicious!!

Please give us the recipe! I have been trying to find a good sweet and sour meatball recipe for years. Thanks!!

Pot Luck

Hey guys,I am new to this incredible web-site and anxious to see if my response goes through. So please be patient with me.
The community in which I live generally has pot luck on the first Saturday of the month.Since I work on Saturday, sometimes I cheat, and pick up something from Costco on the way home.

So many variations. Here is a Jewish version I make quite often. This is my mother's recipie and I think it must have originated from my father's side of the family who were Syrian/Italian Jews. It is the only Jewish recipie for sweet & Sour Meatballs I have ever encountered that uses tomato sauce and/or cinnamon. When I serve it to non-Jews I usually delete the cinnamon, as they are not used to that flavor combination, except perhaps, people from Greek or Persian families.

1 lb. Ground Round
In a large mixing bowl:
2 beaten eggs
1T grated onion
3T Worchestershire Sauce
1 Clove crushed garlic
1T Fresh cracked black pepper
1T sea salt
1/2 t. ground cinnamon (optional)
Add ground meat and mix well.
Add about a cup of matzoh meal (or bread crumbs). Mix well.

Have a layer of hot oil in a skillet. Take some of the mixture and form into balls. Roll in matzoh flour (or regular flour) and place in hot oil. turn occasionally untill well browned.
Transfer to a plate as they are done.

In a large deep skillet combine:

1 Lg. Can Tomato Sauce
1T. Worchestershire Sauce
Juice of one FRESH Lemon
1T Zest of Lemon
appox. 4T Light Brown Sugar
Bring to a simmer and add meatballs. Coven and allow to simmer about an hour. Adjust salt, pepper or sugar to taste. Serve with mashed potatoes, noodles or rice.

Enjoy!

I don't really have a written down recipe anymore and I basically wing it but the ingredients used in the sauce are pretty much as follows, adjusted to taste.

I put 1 can (14 oz) of pineapple chunks and liquid in pot.
2 cups of water
1/4 cup apple cider or white vinegar
2 tablespoons of Soy sauce
1 cup of brown sugar
Bring to a boil and thicken with about 2 tablespoons or corn starch in a paste to desired consistency.

Add your nearly cooked meatballs and then about 3 chopped up bell peppers. I used red/orange/yellow ones this time, should have put in a green one too but didn't have one.

Corningware

Produced this item in the 1970s. It featured a base unit that heated up with a thermostat, and a casserole that fit on top anchored between two fittings on the base handle. The casserole(s) were machined on the bottom to fit flat against the base for proper heat transfer. Regular Corning casseroles would not work properly. The base, made of Corning glass, was very easy to clean and the casseroles could go from fridge/freezer to base unit to table then dishwasher. My mom and sister each have one, both see a lot of use to this day.

Oh Really?

Must spread the word, their will be shouts of joy from cul-de-sacs and Bridge clubs all over the United States.

France has one of two really huge producers of "tempered" glass. Indeed they make those glass "workman's" wine glasses that are found everywhere in that country.

Our everyday dishes are Arcorac, and side from being scratched up from dishwasher use, you can't kill the stuff.

Thanks Pete:

For giving us at least the Ingredients, given that you mentioned about not having a written Recipe any more. It sure looks great and is simple to prepare. The only thing that I'm sure takes the longest, is preparing the Meatballs, besides Cooking them, before including them in the Sweet-& Sour Sauce.

Happy New Years everyone, Steve

Made them tonight!

Thanks for the recipe Pete!! I made them tonight by your recipe and they were delicious!! We had them over white rice with a salad.

Funny, in that my ethnic group thinks nothing of a bolognese sauce with cinnamon or even stews spiced with it. My non-ethnic guestts tend to love it, or hate it. Few seem to be middle-of-the-road about it!

Quick-and-dirty sweet and sour meatballs.

Can/jar of chili sauce
Can/jar of grape jelly (or cranberry sauce).

Combine slowly over low heat until mixed. Add meatballs stew/simmer slowly. low heat. If one truly wants to be a lazy princess one can add ready-made meatballs.

Simple as heck and tastes like a million bucks. Stall like crazy (i.e. weeks/months)before giving out the recipe they'll think you really fussed.
