YAY for the Sales!

At the Estate Sales today Gary (as in Estatesale_gary) was thrilled to find this beautiful late 1950's Sylvania Halolite television. The white frame around the picture tube is lite up by a glass neon tube, it was suppose to prevent eye strain!

Halo Light.....

OMG !

I remember those from back in the 50's - " Beat the Clock " was sponsored by Sylvania - they showed off a Halo Light TV on every show. I want to say Bert Collier was the MC, but I'm not entirely positive about that... I do remember they used to come out and take pictures of the contestents with a Poleroid LAND Camera ( B&W only ) and the pics, and the camera became the consolation prize if they didn't " WIN ".
Surprisingly - I never, Ever, in all my ( never mind how many ) years SAW a Sylvania Halo Light TV lit up and in use.... We only had an RCA " Table Model " with a 12 inch screen - which was still going when I last saw it 30 years ago - It may still be graceing someone's retro basement rec-room. Oh - and my vision never seemed to suffer from lack of the Sylvania Product - or the dire warnings from " the parents " about sitting to close to the TV. ( and in later years - - other things which were supposed to affect vision.)

Thanks for the Memories!

Wow! The white light around the screen makes the set look much more modern than it really is...congratulations Gary!

Sylvania

When I was a kid in the 1960's,I had a friend who's parents had one of those in the dark wood console version. It reminded me of watching the tv with a picture frame around it.
TUBULAR!!

halo light

I grew up with one of those....we got it in 1956, when I was two. It was our first tv, and it was used until 1966. Don't think we had much trouble with it, and if I remember right, the light had a very faint bluish cast to it.

Terrific TV!

Wow Gary! What a great find! Did that halo light keep people from having to buy those kitschy tv lamps? Of course, we are dying to know....does it still work? If it doesn't, how difficult will it be to find tubes, etc?

Great find Gary, My aunt and uncle had a console set with the halolite. Use to love staying over with my cousin and watch "Shock Theater" on Saturday nights. Now I am really dating myself!! It was great to have the halolite in a completely otherwise dark room. Their's was also the first set I ever saw with a remote, conected with a wire if you can believe that. Terry

halo/shock theater

Uh-oh.....I used to watch Shock Theater with my cousin on our Sylvania console with HaloLite. Is there a pattern developing here? My first VCR, a Sony BetaMax (1981, $800) had a wired remote. The only functions the remote had were play, FF, rewind, pause and stop.

WoW!!!

Really great set, Very modern styling!
I never knew that Sylvania made one with a light in it!
I am just dying to know, does it still play???

1952???

That looks more like a 1962 set. The '56 model we had still had the glass over the picture tube and around the halolite...don't think Sylvania would have regressed in their styling....
