As mentioned, Winston cigarettes was a sponsor of the Flintstones. Some commercials were actually the animated images of Fred and Wilma voiced by the actors, holding recognizable Winston packs, and lighting up.

If you look at the history of cartoons, very few were meant for kids. "Mickey" (horny) Mouse, Betty Boop, and the classic mid-century Warner Bros. cartoons were made for adult audiences at movie theaters, etc.
