Hi all
hope that this is in the right place ? if not sorry.
I would like to tell you about LOWS and Sears and the hell they are putting me through with the Tappan micro I bought on March 25/07. yes just one year almost.
I was prepairing things for thanksgiving dinner and doing the vegs and gravey and it just plain quit on me with 5 minutes left!! foutunately I had my old one in the garage and got it out to finish!!! what a pain!
well I took it back to Lowes and they told me that they would not take it back because it was beyond the thirty days of purchase!! I was very ticked when I left!!!
they gave me the number of the service center for Frigidaire and it was Sears. you know how they can be!! well at least they were on time!! after they made the mistake of thinking I was in Kentuckey and a service man calling me from their and asking where my street was. a couple of minutes later I get a call from Sears asking if I was in KY? I said no I am in CA. this person of color said oops we foofed didn't we will reschedual you! I was less than nice about that one!
well the tec came out and checked it out and ordered about $187.00 in parts, two weeks later he came back to put them in and said it should be good to go. well guess what it quit again and it is the same parts again. thermostat circut bord at another $ 162.00. this time I learned something interesting from the tec he told me that their was a problem with that Tappen micro and had over heating defect that causes all the trouble.
the motto to this is I only payed $ 158.00 for it on sale!
I called Frigidaire and they gave me a case # and told me to fax the reciepts but they do not know that it has this defect. I will be calling again tommrow to complain and let then know that I know that it is a faulty unit especially when their are three sitting in lowes now on clearence marked repaired for $138.00!!
The service people at Sears tells me that three times of repair and they will replace it. the teck tells me that it is 4 times . just who do I believe and do they really communate well with one another? service also told me that the teck we had was no longer with the CO and a new one will come in his place would that be ok? of course I had to say yes. well when the teck gets hear its the same one we had all three times go figure!
it will be two more weeks before the parts get hear and he will come and put them in.
I just thought that I would share this with you and see just what you all think and if you have ideas on what to do with this junk and if anyone has ideas on how to stick it to lowes?

hmmm

I grew up with a Tappan microwave... woodgrain!

Before I respond, let me say that I don't think it's appropriate for you to specifically name "person of color"... Why couldn't you just say it was a technician or sales rep? You are implying that if the person hadn't been an African American they would have given you better service. There are low class people in every race. I don't know if there are any African Americans in this group, but if there are, I don't think that kind of post would make them feel very welcome. Do we start calling out gay people and Spanish people next?

I used to work at Sears, so I'm familiar with retail. I know Lowe's is a different company than Sears, but I'm sure general rules apply. When I worked at Sears, I specifically sold microwaves (and vacuums and sewing machines, which were a lot more fun, but I digress)... most of them had a 90 day to 1 year warranty from the manufacturer. We had to sell service contracts... or were supposed to for two or three years. The company made a TON of money on this. However, it protected people in your situation. I know Lowe's has service contracts, and since you are dealing with this issue, you probably refused to purchase it when they sold you the appliance. It's out of their hands now. WHAT I'VE DONE IN THE PAST, if a product fails shortly after I've bought it AND they still make and sell it, AND it's been too long to do a "legal" exhange: I buy a new product and get a refund for the old one. I've done this with my hand blender at Target. I've done this four times with my stupid Swingline electric stapler from Office Depot. I've also done this twice with my Office Depot branded paper shredder. I also did it with my Kenmore Iridium vacuum cleaner long after my ephemeral career with Sears was over. It's a hassle, but at least you're not paying for two products and stuck with a broken one. You may not be able to do this as the turnover rate for microwave models is pretty rapid. The only other thing I could suggest is to talk to the highest manager or supervisor you can (politely at first) and keep going up the ladder threatening to withdraw future business from that company until or unless you get satisfaction. They may at least give you a good deal on a replacement model.

Good luck!

Every small appliance I ever bought or sold specificaly said in large print on its packaging and owner's manual.Do not return to the store where this was purchased. Please call 1-800-___-____ and ask for customer service. You call that number and an associate comes on to first, try to trouble shoot the problem in case the item may have been assembled by its owner incorrectly or used incorrectly. After the trouble shooting has failed, that associate will advise youy what to do after that.I had a new Hoover vacuum that died after 3 months and they told me where to take it and sent that company an email regarding my rehestration code and the warranty on that model.I had to wait a few weeks but they not only repaired it thuroughly but due to the time I had to wait for the parts to arive, they extended my coverage another 9 months!Had I returned/or exchanged it,that would not have happened.
