What is the best detergent to get out tea stains? Used Sainsburys own brand liquid but didn't touch it. Any suggestions what would be best? Do I need a premium detergent like Persil?

Tea alone?

Treat as tannin stain, which will usually require some sort of bleaching. I'd opt for spot treatment rather than subject entire garment. This ensures the spot is gone before the thing goes tot the wash.

If tea with milk or cream you have tannin and protein along with fat. In such an instance you'll need to treat the combined stain with a good all purpose stain remover (with enzymes), then attack the tea (tannin) stain.

Whatever You Do...

Don't use Windex, despite how much some people swear by (or at) it.

This suggestion was made at Church one day after a lady, expecting the usual clear plastic piece to cover the tablecloth, dropped her teabag on a brand new Christmas-themed table cloth.

Suffice to say, it didn't work.

Launderess' suggestion will be the one to follow.

Believe it or not

Have had great success in removing red wine stains by using Tide cold water "free and clear". Have soaked stained table linens overnight and next morning usually all traces of stains including red wine are gone. For the remains or stubborn spots then resort to bleaching. Mind you these were fresh stains. If things have been let go for awhile them YMMV.

My favourite go to stain remover for a host of stains is from Germany called "Hascherpur".

Got several tubes years ago and now find it has been discontinued. But am here to tell you the stuff shifts all sorts of color stains caused by wine, berries, tea, coffee, ink, etc.. Hascherpur is a reducing bleach; meaning unlike say sodium percarbonate or LCB it removes oxygen not adds. Those into dying would know reducing bleaches as "color removers".

I've done that

But was embarrassed to say it. (Old school)
I worked in dry cleaning ...and we use to use the steam gun on tea stains.
At home I've used the boiling water trick, and it dose work, but the steam and hot water trick can't be done on silk, rayon or on colored items that could fade.
Without access to professional spoting chemicals.. I've have on occasion used vinegar, then hot water to flush out the stain.

I bought purple box Persil colour care not the green box so that wont be effective I guess? Thanks for all the suggestions :-)
