I was talking with a man who bought the inventory of a closed Otasco store back in the early 1990s.(Otasco was a chain store in the south of like Western Auto.)He found a unopened Hoover Dial-A-Matic and a brand new, never sold, vintage White Westinghouse Washer/Dryer set. I was just wondering what are some other finds similar to this that any of you have had? I wish I had bought that Hoover from him. I could have had it for $50, but I wasn't into vacuums back then. I often wonder what happened to it.

I have yet to have an unopened wonderful find...I dream of the day that a boxed vintage Hoover finds it's way to me.

btw...I would kill for a new in box dial-a-matic. Despite their flaws, they are my favorites!

Early 1980 GE fridge

A friend of mine bought an avocado MOL 18' GE top mounted no frost refrigerator in 1981. This refrigerator was part a complete kitchen renovation project, including new floor, tiles, DW, gas stove, faucets, sink, etc. Guess what? Refrigerator turned out to be too big for the kitchen entrance door, believe it or not. The contractor overlooked this silly fact! Impossible to get the refrigerator inside the kitchen. To this day the refrigerator is still stored M.I.B in my friend's garage. I am so tempted to buy it from him!

The only appliances found NIB (new in box) here are a Sunbeam Coffeemaster C-30, Oster "Osterett" hand mixer, and Rival Can-O-Matic.

There have been some outstanding new finds by other members (such as Jeff's Philco-Bendix double-loader and Jon's Blackstone dryer!), but I have yet to find anything brand new, never used, whether it is a washer or vacuum. I would LOVE to find an unused White-Westinghouse or Westinghouse W/D set though, as Tim described...drool!!!

Seems like it's much easier to find NOS small appliances than it is large; I think there are still many unused vintage sweepers out there! So far, in the past couple of years, I have seen two NIB Hoover Quik-Brooms, and two NIB Hoover Celebrity Air-Ride canisters on eBay. None of them went for a fortune either...wish I had grabbed one!

i dont remember you mentioning Hoover brooms before? whats got you interested? i bought a NIB quik-broom a while back. i happen to like electric brooms myself.

Hi David,

Wow, you bought one of those NIB Quik-Brooms that were on eBay? Nice...have you opened the box yet? ;-)

I have a soft spot for electric brooms and lightweight uprights, but those seem to be harder to find. So far I've acquired two of them; the first is a Hoover 2-speed Super Quik-Broom from about the mid-70's that came from eBay. The second is a Eureka electric broom that was a gift from none other than Toggle!!! He found it at a thrift store in Omaha during the Convention and surprised me with it. Both of them are in very nice condition and work well. My Junior U1025 fills the lightweight upright category, but I would love to stumble across a Lark.

I've said this before, but my dream electric broom is that Hoover Quik-Broom with the power nozzle! Now THAT would be an awesome find...especially if it was unused!

My Finds

I did a quick trip to San Diego and found a NIB Hoover Floor Polisher and Scrubber from the 70's. The box was opened and then taped shut. I opened it and it was never put together. All the brushes and pad are still in the wrappers as is the shampoo tank. I think it was a wedding gift and the bride saw it and went yuck!!!

Today i went thrifting and found a new in the box never used Sunbeam "The Great American Popcorn Machine II" hot air corn popper. It is in it's styrofoam packing and the instructions are in plastic on top when you open the box.

another story

My wife and I found a Hamilton Beach hand mixer from the seventies at a Flea Market a while back. Her mixer wasn't working, so she thought she would get this one to use. I bought her a new Kitchen Aid and put the Flea Market find in a safe place. Just couldn't stand to open it. Tim

I have a few odds and ends

A wedding present from an antiques dealer that we spent alot of $$$ at was a never used, 1940/early 50s tabletop warmer/broiler. It is odd because it is fancy, silverish with a glass part inside. The coils are either on the top or botton of the food depending how you have it "flipped". Never saw another one. It is perfect, and the wildest thing, is it was a WEDDING GIFT that was never used, and inside was the gift card to the original owners. Probably the most perfect wedding gift for us he could have found.

I have a number of toys that were never used, some I never opened out of the shrink wrap. A huge Tog'l building set, a Brownie Hawkeye camera set with original, non-leaking Burgess Batteries and flash. A Johnny Astro in original box with original sealed astronaut.

I have others, I will have to think on it!

I may start crying, but here we go.

I found a 1959 Lady Kenmore washer/dryer pair in yellow. The dryer had been used, but the washer had not. The owner's manual was still in a plastic bag in the tub, along with the hoses. I opened the top and it was obvious the machine had never seen water.

I used it for about a year, then sold it while I was in a downsizing mode.

I'm going off to kick myself for the 10,000th time.

Hoover Quik-Broom with the power nozzle

Do you mean the S2610, the one with the hose from a couple of years ago? If so, then the search (link) below turns up dozens of them....

Personally, my ideal find would be a new-in-box Hoover Concept One/Two. I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is, if one turns up.

of course i used it! im not really a true collector i guess, if i have a vacuum, i need to use it. and ive used the broom many times. mine was the kind that uses E bags, with the wheeled floor nozzle. i think Austin meant the broom that uses E bags, and came with a full-size powernozzle. early 80s, i think. i saw a NIB Regina broom, the cloth bag type, with powernozzle on eBay also, but i FORGOT to bid!

1950 westinghouse dishwasher

This was my only vintage unopened find. I had to email pics of the inside to the seller as it was bolted closed to a pallet in the box. the dishwasher was given to them when they remodeled their kitchen in 1950 and his mother did not want it installed, she thought that she could do a better job by hand washing.

Jakins..

Did you ever fire it up, or are you keeping it new?

I have a hardly used American Kitchens DW I bought from a gentleman who comes here also. Mine had been a hardware store demo, not used. It was tested once or twice, I had it bought and shipped, and have all the documentation.

One wonders how many more of these types of things are out there!

I'm the exact same way...anything I buy/find is going to get used, even if it is on just a few occasions. Did it still have that "new vacuum smell" when you opened the box? That must have been nice!

Was the Regina you saw on eBay the version with the full-sized P/N? I think someone (PeteK?) found one of these a while back. Pretty cool machine I thought.

The 1980's version of the P/N-equipped Quik-Broom was indeed the one I was referring to; can't remember the model number off the top of my head. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that many are still out there that have been taken care of by responsible owners who changed the bags frequently so the suction motor didn't burn out. Just for fun, I tried a Quadraflex Powermatic and a NuTone P/N cord (which I later eBayed) with my Quik-Broom and was surprised at how much it picked up. I can only imagine how it would be with a beater bar...
