this past saturday was at the junkyard getting several washers
and parts-got very muddy-shoes,pants,even shirt got covered
decided to throw everything in the frigilux to see what would
happen-was quite impressed, everthing got sqeaky clean and the
washer did not complain-was some gravel in the boot and could
hear gravel pinging around in the pump, but all came out good-
shoes too!

Good machines

We've never had any complaints about the washing abilities of ours. I just hope the bearings on our washer last awhile longer!

already done on mine

i bought the washer with bad tub bearings(it's a 1998)and
changed them and the shaft seal and repaired the worn drum
shaft(made a thread on the repair a while back)so should be
good for a long time now.

2140

My 2140 is four years old and so far, excellent cleaning and no service issues, ever. I am aware of the spider corrosion issue, but so far so good. I don't have a water softener, do not use bleach or liquid detergent, only powdered HE detergent (Tide HE or, when available, Persil powder from Germany or UK or Sweden). I leave the door ajar when the machine is not in use, and remove/drain/dry the dispenser at the end of the laundry day.

That said, I have never had a heavily soiled load that didn't come out sparkling clean. Maybe a few ink stains that didn't wash out (ballpoint pen left in shirt pocket, etc.), but "dirt" always washes out clean. Of course, for such loads, I use Heavy cycle, and select Heavy Soil (prolongs wash) and Extra Rinse options.

The wash quality is amazing, especially for the price. Where my concerns lie are in long term durability. Review forums are full of unhappy campers whose machine worked fine for six years and then the spider or bearings went out. What's hard to discern is what % of machines go out early. You could have 100 customers posting bad reviews about broken spiders, but you need to know the number of these machines sold and what % are having premature failure.

spider fine on mine

on my machine the spider was in good shape-corrosion probably
depends on the water and if bleach, etc. is used.
other than the bearing/shaft/seal repair job i did on mine,
only other worn item is the drain pump-motor bushings are
worn and noisy but i have spare on hand.brushes in the drum
motor still have plenty of length left.

Ink...

I use fountain pens exclusively. I haven't carried a ballpoint in over 15 years. Only once in all these years has a pen leaked. I removed the stain entirely with Amodex. I have no idea if it would work on ballpoint ink, but it certainly does the trick on fountain pen ink.

Amodex did it,
Dave

fountain pens

At work I now use Pilot Varsity disposable fountain pens. They last about a month and cost $1. The problem is that I often have to write on carbonless duplicate or triplicate forms, which really require some sort of ballpoint, so I use a Pilot G-2 retractable ballpoint. I've never had a ballpoint leak, in the case of the shirt I placed a pen in the pocket without retracting the point. So of course the ink flowed onto the shirt. I ran a Soak cycle with Persil on that shirt, followed by a Heavy wash cycle and the stain came out completely.

How Much Bleach Usage

does it take to destroy the spider? Is there any way to know? I have the Kenmore variant of the 2940. It's five years old and for the first four years had fewer than five loads per year with chlorine bleach. This year that number has risen to perhaps two or three bleach usages per month. I'm always careful to NOT wash the last load with bleach, so a subsequent washing will splash away or dilute any bleach still hanging around.

hard to say.....

i'd say you are plenty safe with that usage you describe-i've
seen some aluminum parts badly corroded in washers, while i
have also seen aluminum parts in heavily used, decades old,
washers with just light pitting.Where severe corrosion can
quickly occur is when stainless steel and aluminum are very
close to each other but electrically insulated from each other
-a weak electrical current is formed and greatly accelerates
corrosion.
