Next to copper SS probably has been the worst metal foisted upon housekeepers in modern memory. In fact all laundromat and some others are thrilled with SS surfaces on appliances either.
Stainless steel shows nearly every fingermark or some such. Just what anyone that has children or teens needs in their lives. Ditto for spills, drips, and so on.
When local laundromat was refurbished with all new SS front SQ washers attendant spent time each night after closing wiping down every single machine. Think he used a cloth treated with mineral oil. That didn't last. *LOL*
Machines are still wiped down but just with a cloth wrung out of a nasty bucket of water that goes up and down line of washers. Stains, smudges, marks and other things that don't come off with quick wiping are simply what they are and allowed to remain.
OTOH as with copper and brass a whole catalog of special cleaners and polishes for SS surfaces has sprung up. Just what some people wanted in their lives, yet something else that wants polishing.
