Oddly I tend to remember the words in Greek music more than in western / English-language and/or American music. I am guessing the repetition and constant exposure help! (I listen to the same song until I "get" the creative use of language). *LOL* The polysyllabic nature of the words probably does not hurt, either! By necessity they are S T R E T C H E D out rather than sometimes slurred, swallowed or stacattoed

When I was a child still in school.....

A female classmate (wanting to plug my ears just remembering this) was singing "Islands in the stream". She sang "sail away with me, to another world and we'll lie on each other...." LOL I remember thinking she'd turn into a nymph, or something.

For the longest time when I was little I thought that Cher on the radio sang "Give Peace, time for Peace, we heard it from the people of the town... turns out to be "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves", but with her nasal inflection and strong vibrado, the lyrics blended into the melody and sounded the same.

In the 1960's song "If You Wanna Be Happy" I always heard:

"An ugly woman put meals on fast,
She'll always give you a piece of ***."

Go figure!!! It still sounds like that is what they are saying to me, but I'm guessing that last word is pie.

when i was heavily into duran duran a few years ago at the tender age of 16 i used to sing something about Crepe Suzettes to a line in View to a Kill, not that I was the only one. Ive heard colleagues at work singing about crepes to that line too. Very odd. And to that Aerosmith one I ashamedly used to sing Hoover like a lady. Pmsl. KD LANGS "I cant stand gravy", to constant craving and "Old Piano" to Ultravoxs Vienna were confused by one particular colleague. Nick

Thanks Bongobro. I looked up the lyrics on the net and you're right. But, even though I now know that's what they are singing, it still sounded like something else to me. Of course, being a total "mind on sex" teenager back then, I'm sure my brain embellished quite a bit. ;o)
