> I'll never go with a box spring system again. An otherwise good mattress will end up generating back aches simply because the box springs aren't doing a good job of supporting it.
Thanks again all. And Ralph, thanks for looking up the info on your mattress.
We've been there done that with regard to box springs. About five years ago we bought a not-cheap Spring Air set ($1800), and after less than a year it had become so uncomfortable it was literally unusable. I wound up taking a razor blade to its pillowtop, thinking that was the problem. No difference. Then we swapped out the entire mattress but kept the same box spring. SAME PROBLEM. Finally changed the box spring and presto, no more sagging hips and excruciating lower back pain every morning. Wish we would have figured it out sooner.
After that wore out, we tried several latex mattresses, without any luck. I'm sure they're great for back sleepers, but we never found one with the right support for us (we're side sleepers). The mattresses were either too soft and didn't provide enough hip support, or too firm and felt like sleeping on marshmallows.
