The set of ten brass 2.5" safety pins arrived in the mail on Friday. Today I washed a comforter cover, fitted sheet, and pillowcases. I just removed them from the washer and the safety pins kept the opening closed, and the cover did not "eat" the smaller items. I did not discern any additional clanging or noise either in the washer or in the dryer, where they are being dried now. Thanks!

Snaps might be a more viable solution long-term, and would help keep the comforter from sticking out of the slit, but for now the safety pins have fixed the problem.
