So! Now I know why I did not hear from you today!
That is a gorgeous machine but I am still partial to the top mounted controls like my old LG.

I have to wonder if the Meile cleans so well due to the smaller holes in the tub which might keep the water going thru the clothes for a longer period of time? Though I can see the point of thew animal hair being a problem. I thionk you should do a scientific test for claning with the same items stained in the same way and try them in the top and fl machines and show is the difference.
Like I mentioned to you the other day, I really don't think our Duet really clans all that well and that the LG did a better job.
If I can get to it, I may install a water softener in the house tomorrow and see if it makes a difference at all.

I'm going to tweak (or try to) the Water Levels tomorrow. Then I'll throw together a video. I just finished watching a load of White Towels on "Extra Whites" which gave it a 140F Wash Temp.The Sanitize Cycle heats to 158F. And it's amazing how the Wash Tumble Speed slows down and then ramps up to almost a slow spin and then slows down again, then reverses and does the same thing. It's like there are little guys in the machine with Foul Weather gear on running around inside and they're carrying Clipboards reporting on what's going on in there.

Steve... The Wash Cylinder is really a unique design and to see it and touch it it's pretty wild. You can see the water riding on the surface of the cylinder.

That is a humdinger! We'll have to trade wash ins, you come do a load in my SQ's and I'll come do one in your Miele. Love the raised glass logo on the door!!!

 

And my question is fur, if you have something covered with dog fur, cat fur, how does it get out those holes to the pump?? Or is there "clean" fur in the drum at the end of the cycle?? Anyone with experience on this??

I love your Queens !!! It was a tough choice. So when you got the Queens, I figured well,,, I'll get the Benz ! LOL
I don't have a fur critter right now but Mike (Nmassman) mentioned this earlier in the thread. I would imagine it's "Clean Fur". There does not seem to be any large openings at all in the cylinder.
It is quite a learning experience from using a toploader to this. Trying to figure out how to reset the water levels. I have been into the programming mode but I guess I'm doing something wrong as when saving the changes. The machine is perfoming just fine, but with the AW Gene in the body, Ya always need more "Wahdah".
Yes, perhaps the next time you head to Chatham, you should stop by and whirl a Laundry in the "Benz" !!! (I might even make lunch) Nice to hear from you. Eddie
 
I've had this machine w/ matching T9802 dryer for three years. Let me share some observations...

You can absolutely use liquid detergent, but reduce the quantities and wash at lower temps to reduce sudsing...

W4842 utilizes Miele's patented SpinClean technology which accelerates the drum motion to ensure clothes in the middle of the drum get pulled toward the outer edge, ensuring proper turnover and excellent wash results...

Due to the small holes of the Honeycomb drum, W4842 is not especially good at rinsing away pet hair...

Normal cycle does NOT use the heater under any circumstances despite what someone else said. It has been confirmed over on GardenWeb with a power meter that there is no power draw from the heater during the Normal cycle...

My go-to detergent is Tide HE Total Care (liquid) and I use Persil Universal Megaperls on my white loads...

THE BOTTOM LINE - I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS MACHINE!

I chose the Miele is because of the Heater

The 4842 looks like a great machine, and one I'd consider getting, but seriously you can get internal water heaters with a large number of other brands of front loaders, from Electrolux to Whirlpool. Even the higher end high efficiency top loaders now have internal water heaters (LG and Whirlpool, for example). Of course, the Miele has higher quality than all the rest of the competition, and not for that much more $$$.

That said, I don't think any HE washer does very well at removing pet hair. It's a function of the lower water levels. Even the Neptune 7500, which uses almost twice as much water as more modern front loaders, and has bigger drum holes, leaves a fair amount of pet hair on stuff like blankets and throw rugs. This comes out in the dryer, instead.
 
Pet Hair

If can fit will wash in the Whirlpool top loading portable. If not they go to the local laundromat's washers and dryers. Or at least washed in the Miele and dried in perhaps the Whirlpool dryer (if the things will fit), otherwise to the laundromat's dryers.
 
Well, Betty had better stay away with her two cups of dirty sand!  I'm surprised that it doesn't do a good job with pet hair (as well as other debris - sand, etc. I would imagine) for such a high end machine.  I've been using the 2003 LG washer in the garage and have been quite pleased with the (fine, short) pet hair removal ability.  I washed a small rug last night that Newton uses in the garage for a "bed" and though hairy and dirty, it was perfectly clean and hair-free when it finished.   We examined this Miele washer pretty carefully at the Mart during our annual trip there New Years day.  We couldn't find any provision for adding a rinse (or is the "Sensitive" setting doing that?) and we could find no way to drain/spin or rinse only.  Are there ways to program for these additional cycles not obvious on the controls?  I would love to see the programming options for this washer, keep us posted!

Is the Link to the Miele Web Page for the 4842. Click on Wash Programs/ Options.
There is a Drain Spin , Quick Rinse and the Extra Rinse is the Sensitive Option. There is even a Beach Towel Setting that uses a Cold Water Flush (No detergent) and Spin to rinse out sand. Not that I will be using that setting. This machine will NOT start the Coffee in the morning or Check the temperature on the evening's roast, LOL.
I looked at the water coming out of the drain hose and it was very clean after the 2 standard rinses before I went into the programming to Max. Water Level. I washed probably 5 loads on the Factory Settings and had Excellent Results.
I also was well aware of other machines that have Steam and Heater options. But after watching and listening to the Pros and Cons of Front Load machines for the past 4 years, and taking into consideration the Longevity of most major brands,(including Spyders corroding away and bearings going after 3-5 years, I chose Miele to be my machine of choice. And for what it's worth, Mother always said "You get what you pay for".
 
Talking about getting you are paying for, I can't believe the price on that machine. $1900 for the washer and $1200 for the dryer, plus $300 ea for the pedestals.

That would mean that the entire set w/ pedestals would cost $3700... Damn!!

When I was looking at a set with pedestals, 1 yr old demo models were $4000 for the set w/ pedestals! If I had wanted them new, they would have been $4500!

When I saw a Miele Brochure on the tub design it was interesting that they was inspired from a turtle.

Hexogon structures and little holes to reduce fabric damage.

 

I have five cats yes I had to adpot them from my friends passing at this point.

But I can tell you that NO washer even our beloved filter flows does not get rid of all hair or sand.

So I always remove hair in the dryer or black T-shirts goes through a 20 to 30 min half full basket on a no

heat program, then a wash.. sometimes in shedding sesson a lint brush plus air drying to get rid of hair.

Since I have not washed in that model I hope you give us results on that matter.

 

You have a great washer and I want to know how the pillow cycle works.

Are you not digging the 1400 rpm spin speed are you not out of the dryer in minutes ..LOVE that.

I hope it is informative and shed a little more light on your subject.

Hey Darren.
Thanks. I couldn't find the Pillow Programm, but there are many others. I really like this machine. I chose Miele because this company has been at it for a long time. And I just feel more confident with German Engineering than Korea or China. Yesterday I washed 4 Heavy Carhartt Sweatshirts and 3 pairs of Flannel Lined Jeans. The machine did not even wince at this load, but after the 1400 spin they were out of the dryer DRY in 25 minutes. Normally I would have just washed 4 sweatshirts and it would have taken 50-60 minutes.
I opted not to get the pedestal as the machine is a good height for me. And for $300... I can use the stretching execises.
You know I have a real problem these days justifing to pay the same price for a dryer as for the washer. A dryer has 1/4 of the components that a washer needs so where does that price come from ? I know people want the matching set, but I find it ridiculous to pay the same amount for the dryer. The Kenmore next to the Miele I bought last year Brand New for $379. And the clothes come out Dry.

That was one of the things that put me off to Miele, for the simple issue that they wanted an arm and a leg for the dryer, while most other manufacturers sell the dryer for nearly half the cost of the washer.

In some ways, I wish they made vented front loading combos again... I'd buy two of them.

You shouldn't let that put you off about Miele.

Before I bought the Miele, I was in Sears looking at various Brands, and the Dryers were the Exact Same Amount as the Washers. At Least Miele was a couple of Hundred less. I believe (I'm not sure) it was either a Kenmore or Whirlpool Set and both Washer and Dryer were around $1500.00 a piece.
 
And that's it.

Reassemble, and Close the Door.

I found Nothing.

I've got the Water Level Higher on all the Rinses, but there is still some Magic I've got to figure out on the Wash. (Although, Everything is Washing and Rinsing Very Well.) The Water after the last Rinse is Crystal Clear.

I'll do some Videos after I figure out the Wash Level in a Seperate Thread.
