Well, it seems I have too much time on my hands again and I decided it was time to play with one of my newly acquired Lux 60's. They were always good performers but you could not really clean out deep down dirt in carpets with any pile.

So, check out this picture and you will see that I have added a power nozzle outlet, (Air-Way), added a pigtail, added a newer lux hose, ((Ultralux colors), and then you just add the Lux power nozzle of your choice! Seen here is a P/N-2, (goes with my 1205), and also seen is a newer P/N-1693 from the Ultralux.

Finally, a Electrolux model 60 that really cleans! Keep in mind that this vacuum was made around 1954. Of course put on your truss before lugging it around or you will end up in traction. I may even have to drag this one to the VCCC convention in St. Louis in '06.

Now off for vacuuming and dusting...............

Close up of new power port

Here is the power nozzle elecrical hookup. I used the current outlet that Air-Way has on the Signature/Centurion models. Then, a Dremmel was used to cut into the housing and finally it is rivoted in place. Very subtle.

Add the versatile muti-purpose motorized Electrolux "Sidekick" and you are ready to do your stairs, upholstered furniture, drapes, bedding or car interior.

Great when you can mix the old with the newer!

Nice Mod Charlie!

My Mom has a couple in the attic in the garage, and I think three Kirbys. Can you believe my nosy butt hasn't climbed up there yet to check them out!

Chopping holes.......

It does not feel bad when you can make a vacuum really clean! Plus I have several others. Sacrilege is/was when Electrolux Inc. sent out a decree to their dealers/franchisees that all trade-ins were to be disposed of completely or you could send the vacs to lux and they would do it for their dealers. Now that is pretty low down! That happened close to 30, (or even earlier), years ago.

looks good!!

Electrolux is one of my favorite vacs.

You did a professional job of installing that outlet. It is convenient being on the top. color coordinated. Is that hose new? Do they still make woven hoses with a pigtail? for that matter do they make ANY electrified hoses with pigtails?

Your right about electrolux. destroying "traded" vacs. I think the "traditional" electrolux reputation/franchise/product is soon to be non-existant. Much like maytag and kitchenaid. I recently went to a dealer to purchase bags for a Silverado. Those were supposed to be the original 4 ply bags. No, they don't carry or make the 4 ply. Now a different company makes the single layer bags that have a special anti alergy layer. blah, blah, blah... I returned the bags. I have also seen used electroluxs, some dating back to the 50s, at several aerus-electrolux dealers.

On Modifying old cleaners....

Charlie,

My very first Air-Way that I ever owned was the Sanitizor 66. One of the very first thing that I did, besides replacing the cord was add a powernozzle outlet. I did this by cutting out a small rectangle on the left handside, facing the machine; and pushing thru the non-stock opening an inlet connector for a Hoover Celebrity QS Series . I then added a very plain Eureka Built powerhead with a woodgrained applique across the front that was from a Rexair D2 series, and after carefully rubbing off the Rexair logo, and stenciling Air-Way, I was off and running. For the hose I used a crushproof hose that a long dead Tri-Star once had. this gave me a 9-10 ft. hose attached to the ferrules.

What I found tho to do this was many harbingers to deal with. For example, the ferrule that the original hose had to connecft hose to cleaner was too short but worked okay. I had to used a MUCH longer pigtail from cord to machine, than was supplied originally. So a brown FilthyQueen pigtail was used and provided sufficient length. thankfully the hose/wand end ferrule worked perfectly, and the cord from the Eureka head reached this connection without additional lenghts needed.

I also found that, in order to get the power from the side body connection, down towards the bottom where the switch and cord enter and are affixed to the lower motor housing....that I had to drill a 1/4 inch hole in the aluminum beltline motor support to push a 3 ft. Hoover convertible cord to the upper outlet secured with wire nuts and a generous amount of electrical tape. I attached the black wire of the convertible cordto the black wire coming from the cord that also ran a lead to the motor. The white wire of the convertible cord, attached to the other wire leading from the switch to the motor, the wite wire from the cord being connected to the white lead of the powerswitch.

IN ALL IT ALL WORKED WELL, AND I WASN'T ELECTROCUTED!!!!!

Later in my collecting life, I chose to dissconnect all of that and remove the plug and replace the hose with the blue hose of a Royal Powertank, and use just the original wand and nozzle supplied when I obtained it. Which were actual stock. The reason for this , was I was going to give it to Jeff Parker as he was trading it for something else I believe....my mind's fuzzy as that happened nearly 10 years ago.

Anywho, I repeated the process, much better this time tho to the Air-Way 88 Mark II that I recieved from another vacuum cleaner collector a few years later. I still have this machine, and it's a joy to use becasue it has a Douglas Powerhead on it, that I purchased strictly becasue it was the current AIR-WAY powerhead, and becasue I was VERY unable to find an ABC nozzle that was also used...not to mention the Eureka head that you have showed to me thru the pictures you posted awhile back..

Another thing, I was able to retain the braided hose look by using a last of a NOS Compact braided blue hose, the original ferrules and hard plastic hose jackets that are that hard to find aqua color...and transffered the power via a Electrolux model G hose cord and straps. (Between machine and Powerhead)..the cord coming from the powerhead was white like the head itslef. In allit looks good runs good, and makes me happy as I myslef converted it to be modern and vintage all at the same time.

Good for you. You did a splendid job.

And for those who may pooh pooh such a conversion...let it be known that Metropolitan Vacuum, did these Electrolux conversions for years...using the Douglas powerhead and Eureka Spiral bound hose. Spiegel for example sold these "refurbs" to the public for very attractive prices. And YES the model 60 was included and offered a powerhead option, just as Charlie has done to his machine.

Yours

Chad

Chad, Jeff, BethAnn and Steve,

Thanks for your comments. I did not know that Metropolitan had done the same thing for Lux but it does not surprise me. My inspiration for this came from vac collector Michael LaBue, (formerly of NYC, now living in Ft. LaTeeDa), who had friends in the Big Apple that did the same thing with a Lux 30.

Like I mentioned earlier, the 60 is a great vac and could be used as a weapon if needed. But, it lacked the ability to really clean tightly woven carpet or carpet with any kind of pile. I remember well, both the 30 and 60 as my mother had both. When the AF came out with the power nozzle, I thought, hooray!--a Lux that will really clean. (And I have put the Eureka VibraGroomer III P/N on it as well.)

Steve, it is my understanding that Lux/Aerus does make a flexible hose with a pigtail at the machine end but they will not be around much longer. Current retail is $100 to $120 but I still plan to get one. The one I have has minimal leakage but as we all know, the woven hoses will end up leaking sooner or later compromising suction.

Bags for the Silverado that are really great are made by Environcare and are available from ESSCO or HESCO. Get your local vac shop to order for you or let me know and I will get them for you!! They are as good as genuine Lux or as I think, even better.

Chad, your story is great! I'm always glad when I have a few extra machines to work with and a main one to use as a "role model" for when I forget how to reassemble. I had originally thought of using a Hoover Celebrity power nozzle outlet until Chuck Chatham, another vac enthusiast and store owner suggested the Air-Way item to me. Since I am an Air-Way dealer it was that much easier.

Anyway, just for the record, I am a purist in every sense of the word and like keeping vacuums original. I'm glad I have more than one of this model but I am pleased with final product and will probably spray paint the pigtail cord to match the machine.

Thanks for comments and have a great weekend!

Air-Way -Charlie-COOL!!Love it-an excellent way to make a great vac even better.I would guess you could enter it in the VCCC "Monster Vac" catagory?Does the bag ejector in the 60 work?I have an LX and its bag ejector "equipment" is corroded to beyond recognition.got the machine from an appliance "swap shop" here-usually get washers from them.

Electrolux 60

My Maternal Granny's machine! Except hers didn't have theh little wheels in back. Loved how it shoved the full bags out.

Thanks for showing this Charlie, I`ve been wanting to attempt such a mod but didn`t know where to find the wiring.

Hi Charlie, That is so neat what you have done with that Lux 60!! I love to be able to use the vintage machines for "real" cleaning and this would make that possible. When I was in Spokane at Mark's mini meet he gave me a completely restored Lux model 60. You are so right you need to wear a truss when moving this machine. Mine doesn't have the optional wheels that yours has on the back otherwise it is just the same. Thanks for sharing. Terry

I must have missed this before - thanks for bringing it into view again Terry.

Amazing work Charlie, the addition of the PN is brilliant!

I still have my 60 to send you, just trying to decide on a box to wrap it in. Would you like a Kenmore "box"? Shipping costs might be a tad higher, how many hookups do you have for washers and dryers anyway?
