The Draper Dishwasher:

Not to throw a wrench into the works, but I scrapped a Magic Chef dishwasher a few months ago, that had a similar, but not exact, console.

No monkey wrench at all - because Magic Chef was the company that bought Gaffers & Sattler in 1969.

It stands to reason that there would be great similarities between the two brands after that, in addition to the fact that a D & M-sourced dishwasher is always easy to spot.

If I were shopping for a dishwasher in the period and confronted with two or three identical machines with different branding I would surely pay extra for the one with the starbust on the control panel!

Sandy, I know the late 1970s and beyond models did not have that star-burst with "Automatic Dishwasher" in the middle of the control panel.  So, I'd hve to say first half of the 1970s.

That dishwasher went in for Season #3 I believe. There is an episode where the maid turns on the dishwasher. You can actually hear it running.
Personally I would have hoped they would have installed a KitchenAid. But seeing a dishwasher in that kitchen was a treat!

That might be the actual dishwasher, or could also be a sound effect dubbed in later. Hollywood does that kind of thing all the time.

Gaffers & Sattler

The initial episodes in this series drove me crazy. The refer was correct along with the Maytags that Betty used to stand against during the spin cycle. Then there was the dishwasher. POS from a later era that I think was eventually updated when they changed the fridge. In Cali, these dishwashers were in every tract house, same machine with different brand names on them. What is the reference to D & M branding? I know the threads late, I just found it.

D&M--Design & Manufacturing.  Produced dishwasher under all sorts of brand names--as you say same machine with different brand names.  Kenmore, Magic Chef, Modern Maid, Gaffers & Sattler, Tappan, Caloric, Norge.  Slightly different racking features and cycle sequence options, but all the same.

It looks like they used the dishwasher in another set with different panels!

 

I have the same 1963 Frigidaire fridge and 1959 Frigidaire Imperial oven but on mine, the colors are reversed (and my oven lacks a window).

 

I also have the Custom Imperial <span style="font-size: 12pt;">double wall oven </span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">version with the same door as in the single oven Imperial on the Mad Men set. </span>

Ah, Mrs. Rosen's (Linda Cardellini) kitchen.  Certainly didn't mind seeing her on TV again.  Never noticed the reappearance of the D&M though!

I Missed That Too....

....Mainly because I was so P.O.'ed at both Don and Mrs. Rosen.

Even for adultery, that was just plain damn DUMB. I was surprised that only Sally caught them, and that no more came of it than did come of it. In fact, for a while there, I was expecting Don to get shot over it.

P.S.:

Sylvia's dish drainer's drainboard is wrong - that's a new Rubbermaid drainboard with the drain ramp on the side. In the '60s, dish drainboards drained from the end.
