Here 'tis...the Hoover Constellation model 867A from 1965-1981. Made in Great Brittain and sold in a Military PX in Germany to a US soldier's wife. It made its way to Ohio with them upon return. Too bad I did not turn left into the livingroom at the estate sale. Joe did and now HE is the proud owner of this near mint machine. He got a HUGE bag of 50 or so bags in original packaging and the original brown paper sack with matching green lettering that came in the box with the cleaner...all for the cheap price of $15. Too bad I did not go left...I HAD to miss the livingroom and go for the Convertible (U4007) in the hall. One tiny mistake...now the 867A will live in Buffalo in the good hands of Buffalo Joe. Oh well....there has to be more out there...bitter, party of one your table is ready!

Seamus can you help us put a date on this cleaner???? Here is the serial number... I.B. 902861. Thank you!

Wow!!!

Tom, oh the emotions ( not to mention the underwear ) you must go through when finding something as rare or cool like this! Congrats on being in on the find. Congrats to Joe also! Marty

WOW

Now thats a find!!!

Will there be anything left to find when I get out there in a couple of weeks??

To Get this home.....

This British Connie rode hoe in the front with me. I wasn't taking any chances of it bouncing around in the back of the truck on the way home. Here is a pic of it ready to depart Tom's place. Its now safely home in my living room awaiting a spot with my other connies.

Thanks Tom and Heather for letting me visit.

One thing confuses me...

It looks like the vacuum was made for our voltage (120V), not the standard 240V for Europe. Am I reading this wrong, and why would it be made that way?

The voltage was 110 because it was sold on a US military base in Germany. I guess it was easier to get vacuums for the military families from Europe than ship them from the States. It does sound a bit different than the US connies. But you have to hear them side by side to hear the difference.

So I'm not sure if the motor is a UK built 110 volt motor or a US import for the UK machine. Maybe our UK readers can help.

Joe

Excellent finds guys, especially the 867A Constellation, it looks just beautiful! I was a little bit confused about the voltage as well; when you say that the motor sounds different, does it run slower than the US-built Connies? That would make sense if they put a British motor in and adapted it for US voltage.

To get this home

Joe,

What a beauty Connie is!! Looks like she is belted in for the ride home. I wouldn't have taken any chances either. I love the color combination.

Take care,
Robb

Hoover England

My sister and her Husband were stationed in England and Germany. those countries made a limited number of vacs for the Us military but made them according to our electrical voltage here and the way they would use them like say in the UK they also came with an adaptor that would plug into the Uk outlets so they could use the vacuums while they were station there. and then went they came back to the States they could bring the vac over here and use it with no problem. But they not only made vacs for the military they also made other appliances as well

Color Combo.....

Rob and Corey,

The colors of that Connie threw me at first. As I was walking over to it, I was thinking "did it get painted?" Only after turning it over did I realize it was a UK machine. Also, before I saw the UK info I briefly thought Canadian model too.

Yes, that Connie did ride shotgun all the way home. I didn't want to chance banging it up in the back. The other vacs were back there though. Everything made it home safe and sound.

Glad you all like the machine.

Joe

BTW, Robb, did I mention I liked your blue Westinghouse vac?

What A Find.........

Hey Tom/Joe

Blimey- thats just about the rarest colour Connie over here so goodness knows what it makes that one!!!!!.
I will ask a friend who has serial/production dates to confirm a more exact date but its defiantly pre 67 as it has the old type serial number- Hoover changed to the easily decodable type in Jan 67 when the Junior 1346 made its debut(your 1340).
I would imagine the motor is of the UK type as the UK plant had the facility to produce differently wound fields and armatures, this was necessary originally as the UK voltage wasnt totally standardised@ 240V until approx 1966!!!- Joe if you can post a pic id be happy to confirm this. One thing that is interesting is the wattage, our 230-250V machines are 580W!!.
As has been mentioned in another post the Queen dosent have to actually use an item personally for it to have a warrant- it just has to be used in a Royal residence lol!!

Hope this helps

One more- Ratings

Hey again guys

I see on the rating plate the 100-115V rating is 4. Im not sure how this worked but the 230-250V is 9. Presumably this means there were quite a few voltage ranges produced!!

Seamus

various voltages

Europe would have been 220v

Somewhere has 200v

Australia has 240 v except Western Australia used to have 250v until the late 1970s. There also was a 32v DC version sold here for use on remote farms with diesel or wind generators.

I have an old brochure for Hoover floor care from I think sometime in the 60s, it includes voltages and other tech info for each model under a heading "for the man of the house!!"
It lists Convertible 6525B as avail in 225-250v and 32vDC; Lark 1334B in 240v and 32vDC; Constellation 865B in 225-250v and 32vDC; Harlequin 419 in 240v only; Scrubber-polishers 5464B and 5134B as 240 or 32vDC; Dustette 2614, Cylinder cleaner 417G and Hooverette 2944B all 240v only.
