The first look at the 1957 GE Dryer

No sooner had I found the 1957 GE Filter-Flo washer than I heard from a couple of members about this dryer!! I like to have matched sets of laundry equipment, so I was thrilled to hear about this. With the help of Jon(jetcone), this dryer made it's way from John's to Boston, where Phil and I picked it up in January. The only hiccup was that a: I had no space in the garage in Ogden and b: Hubby didn't know about it... Fortunately, my neighbour, Cyndi, let me store it in her garage; last weekend, I snuck it into the garage while hubby was too busy in the gardens to notice!

So, first thing I had to do was connect it to the 120 volt supply to see what would happen...

So, Hubby (and probably the two other neighbours in our valley) heard the rumble... He thought this was the '63 that is now in service in the Ogden Laundry... BUSTED!

Well, he went back to gardening and I went back to testing. So, it would seem that I have a flat spot on a drum roller. I didn't get to take the drum out, but I do believe that this model would be a friction-drive and if so, I happen to have a NIB drive roller for the 1958 model and I hope this may help. I'll know more when I get the drum out for a better look.

The bad news is that the timer motor is dead. I'll be on the hunt for a suitable replacement!

Air Freshener

Now this is something I really don't understand... On the control panel, there was a rectangular pink plastic part labelled 'Air Freshener' with a scale below it from OFF to HIGH.

Well, I pulled it out and it seems to be a tray. I'll guess that one was supposed to put some kind of a fabric softener/freshener product in this tray. The pointer (you can barely see it inside the tray) had broken off at some point, but fortunately got trapped in the control panel. What luck!

I know the 1958 version of the Clothes Conditioner had a small aerosol bottle that was used for the Air Freshener - what would have been used on the 1957 model??

Note the black tubing at the right of the console - I guess this would draw the freshener into the drum. Very interesting system... I'm hoping some service information for this beastie may just find its way into Automatic Ephemera... Was that too subtle?? LOL

New air freshener

Ironing water can be added in the tray just a little I use a drier ball with a sponge insert in my Neff.

But that is a cool looking machine I like the paint finish in picture's and video as it looks nice and not to scuffed for the age.

The 1957's were nice! Not only did they introduce GE's 'straight-line styling', but they were the only year that had the timer on the left end of the console.

That is probably a porcelain enamel finish on the top cover, not paint.

Very durable if not abused.

Yes flat spot for sure on those hard rubber rollers. Good thing you have parts in stock! Now get back to the Dominion!!
