Since the news of the Chile earthquake this morning, my partner has been desperately trying to find out if his mother and friends are ok in Santiago. Phone calls aren't getting through of course but then there's always Facebook.....He contacted a Facebook friend who was on line, who contacted another friend on line who lives close to his mom's carehome. That person ran around the corner, checked on Senora Isabel, came back and passed on the news that his mom was fine. At the same time 2 friends from San Francisco that are in Santiago right now visiting their families, also posted they were ok. Still waiting to hear if some other friends are doing alright - they're not on FB. Say what you want about FB (and I have) but I'm impressed!

hey...were glad you were able to make contact, and their all OK....no matter what you had to use to contact them...at least you can sleep better and not worry...internet one way or another is a good thing, use what ever means you have to!

we should all say a little prayer that they stay safe...God Bless!

fb

is great its the only way I am able to keep up with some friends and family. It has brought others together I think it is a wonderful useful tool.

During 9-11 the only way I could communicate from my offce was AOL.

mobiles and landlines were either done or jammes. Most news websites were inaccessible due to high voluime and demand!

Social networks like Facebook, Orkut, twitter, etc are much more than fun.

I discovered that since I started using my Orkut account for business too.

The result was so fantastic that I created a second profile for business purposes only.

The same happens with instant messengers.

Unfortunately there are many people that still don't know they can communicate in real time by text, voice call or videoconference for free.

In Brazil MSN (Windows Live messenger) is the most famous, but there are also other significant softwares like Yahoo messenger and Skype.

Recently I taught a member how to use Skype and he loved it so much that he bought a camera. More than the fun and the great moments we have chatting about many things, skype and the webcams were excellent tools to help my restoration project (unimatic). sometimes an image can worth billions of written words.

and of course, chatting using your voice and seeing the face is much more "personal" than an email. when you laugh the other person can hear it instead or reading a cold "LOL".

Talking about emergencies, most people forget something really important. post a text at his/her own profile like "i'm ok but my home was destroyed. I'm going to be at blah blah, blah..."
