a friend sent me a link via e mail to "the judy garland christmas show" on you tube last nite. it's a six part series and although i don't know how to put the link on here it's very easy to find!
i have always loved what i have seen of judy's variety show but this complete episode from christmas 1963 is just too wonderful!
liza and lorna are there as well as her son joe and her guests include mel torme and jack jones. and ofcourse judy is, well fabulous!
i see it as a rare glimpse into her personal family and from what i have read from both lorma and liza she was a very loving and wonderful mother to her children in spite of her drug dependency and the horrors it brought on her and her family.
anyway. if ya love judy like i do or even if ya don't it's a rare glimpse into early 1960's television and the american lifestyle at that time.
and when i watch this show from that wonderful period of the early sixties i can't help but relate it to washers and dryers and dishwashers. the kitchenaid hydrosweep was not yet out, nor the rollermatic! impeller dishwashers were still very common and also pull out dishwashers. i wonder what she had in her laundry room at home or whether there was a hobart in her kitchen. maybe a frigidaire spin tube!??
and i must wonder how hard it was to appear that gay and frivolous at the time of president's kennedy's death. our nation was in mourning that christmas season, judy could have done nothing but help soothe our sadness with her unique talents, but it must have been hard for her to be that lively when she had to be feeling a deep personal loss.
i think she probably was the greatest performer of the 20th century as many of her peers have stated. merry christmas
judy, i hope you're finally gettin some of the peace and happiness you brought (and still bring) to so many of us!
