Last night I cleaned out the Freezer of this thing. This photo is a before shot. Notice the bug inside. I think they call these things silverfishes. I also had to end the life of yet another cricket. Today I try to clean out the refrigerator part of this appliance, and it is going to make cleaning out and sterilizing the freezer look like a walk in the park.

I hope we have refrigerator guys here because I will most likely seek advice today or in the near future.

Can it get any worse?

The fridge part of this thing is about the most disgusting thing I've ever laid eyes on and the stench, my God. I started pulling out the shelves and anything that I could get out of it. There was a compartment on the Fridge door that says "Dairy". I opened it up and someone left food behind rotting in this thing. It's moldy and disgusting.

That is almost as gross

as the "sweatsock" story of my youth when I worked in a gas station and had to clean out the restrooms. I'll save that story for when we are in person and in between meals.

One question I do have for you--how were you able to hold that open, AND take a picture of it without losing it. And the mind boggles with questions. Just what is WRONG with a person that they have to have a STASH of those things. Good God man, go see a doctor! For that matter, who still uses them? Yech. Man I feel so sorry for you!

The only thing you are missing is the almost obligatory "honey bear". You know the one you always seem to find in fridges. It's that dumb bear filled with honey, they always seperate at the seams and ooze honey in a puddle and off every rack down to the bottom.

What is it with that freaking bear.

Are the suppositories still useable? (kidding! Don't use them!)
I can't get over that anyone would put someting this nasty on Ebay! Did it state in the ad that it was this dirty?
Hope you got it for at good price.

Here's the listing on eBay

Can you say fraudulent?

I articulated the story of buying this thing in another thread and I'll copy and paste it below. And it's the short story. This is going to be a long-term project. I can see that now. I hope I can look back on this some day and say it was worth it.

The Kelvy Experience
The Kelvinator story. I been snooping around for a new vintage fridge for years. I've been close to purchasing a fridge several times, and each time something went bad. Like I purchased a fridge in the Midwest. A beautiful turquoise fridge. Had everything I was looking for. I arranged for the shipping which cost a fortune since the guy didn't live near any major arteries. The owner offered to crate it for me. When he tried to move it with a handtruck, it fell off the handtruck and damaged it. I cancelled the sale. The next one was about an hour and a half away from me. White GE with the lazy susan shelves. It was beautiful. That fell through. You get the idea. So, before I was a member here, I surfed this place and someone pointed out an eBay listing for three matching turquoise kelvinator appliances. I really only was interested in the fridge, although I would have picked up the matching dishwasher for a good price.

Well this story gets long and involved. Apparently the buyer I was buying from bought the appliance on eBay from the custodian. Then her new house deal fell through and she couldn't use them. These appliances were still in the custody of the original seller and they were in a shed in the backyard among a pile of debris and for all intents and purposes, completely open to the elements. They have been in complete squalor for months or possibly as much as two years. So, based on the listing, I'm expecting a fridge that is in terrific shape that's ready to plug in and use. I drive two and a half hours to pick it up and find these three appliances in this condition. I was mortified. I had to dig around in the debris to find the bottom grate cover. It was covered in crap, was rusting, had white house paint all over it. It was unreal. I was torn over whether to just drive back without it or not. I chose to bring it back for a number of reasons. I had already moved my working fridge down into the basement. Oh, and when they were stored, they didn't crack open the doors, so the inside is overwhelmed with mold and mildew and smells horrible.

There's a lot more to this story, but those are the basics. I now have this beast in my kitchen, where it's been leaking for 3 days now. It buckled one of my kitchen floor tiles, like huge bubbles coming up out of the tile. I put a heavy garden stone over it this morning flatten it and pray it will dry back into shape. I have tried various cleaners on the outside. Some are too strong and are taking a thin layer of turquoise paint off. Fantastic seems to be working the best for me but even with that, to get it fairly clean of the crap on it, I'm thinning the paint. I'm afraid that this thing is going to require a repaint for it to truly look great again. The white house paint splattered all over it will not come off easily. I posted one pic of the inside of the fridge in the Super forum. Well, the moderator moved the thread there, but the name of the thread is "Thanks". I have other pics to document the condition. I didn't contact the seller yet, but I'm very unhappy. And the woman who bought the stove, I contacted her and warned her about the actual condition of these appliances. She cancelled the pick-up by craters and freighters, but she sent a blank check to the woman and the bank won't put a stop payment on it.

There's more to this bad experience, but those are the basics. If I'm lucky, I'll have refrigeration in my main floor in a couple of weeks. Until them, I have to go to the basement. I plugged in a fridge down there to use until I either get this thing cleaned up for use or decide to scrap it.

Yikes!! Whatever you do, don't open at suppository jar up! (LOL) You did a great job on the freezer section...I'm sure you'll have it gleaming in no time!

As for the mechanical condition and "others"...how in the hell did it get in such bad shape so quickly, especially after looking at those eBay pictures which appeared to be fairly recent? Was this a victim of a kitchen remodel or something? I still can't believe someone would put 3 perfectly working, near-mint vintage appliances outside to decay...they should be shot. Hopefully it won't be too big of a job when you get to the compressor.

Let us know the rest of the details!

To Austin's poing

Mold and grunge like that just don't happen. How did it get so bad, or to his point, was the picture taken 2 years ago? It doesn't make any sense. What did the lady say?

Four years ago we had a tenant who left the building and did not tell us that they was giving up the lease and left food in the fridge, Con Edison turn the power off and Boy-Ohhhh-Boy did it stink from here to Kindom come! We had no choice but to dump it in a rolling container truck rather than for the city Sanitation truck to remove that appliance! The fear of taking the doors off and killing anybody that walks by it would be a crime that someone has to pay.......

Oh that means US!!!

I hope the next tenant that leaves takes everything with them including old rotten food!

LOL

You need the power of ....

Wow, you really got the freezer cleaned up nice. The main fridge section is going to take some time. Cory loves to bring home smelly refrigerators, because I can't smell! I open the door, go to town with some 409 to soak, and work on them for hours, not having a clue that most human beings can do what I'm doing! (like the 61 Frigidaire SS, that thing had a 1/2 lbs. of meat in it!).

I have a feeling that the pictures in the auction were taken quite some time ago, if not *years* ago. Once you get it cleaned out throughly, I would seriously take a look at the operational section of the unit, to see if it is safe to even plug in. A good time to do this is cleaning the drip tray. Make sure the wiring is in good shape, no exposed wires, etc.

Once it is established that the compressor runs and it begins to cool (if it cools...), grab a few pounds of baking soda, and let mother nature take care of the lingering smell. Wow!

In hot weather,it doesn't take long for mold to develop, especially when something like cheese or bread is left inside and closed up.A few weeks or so can get 'em nasty.
To me that 'fridge doesn't look too awful bad,I've cleaned up a lot worse than that. The hardest thing to clean will be the gasket,if it's been discolored by mold.I have a few that have been on my truck for about 2 weeks in the hot sun,I'll get a picture of what I normally deal with.

Oh, Good

There are some refrigerator people here. I've been at the fridge all day. The gaskets are getting clean, but they are stained. It would be nice if I could whiten them up more. Any ideas on how to do this?

Long story, but there was a matching Stove, Fridge and Dishwasher up for sale. The lady that bought the Stove said she saw these appliances on eBay two years ago. If that's true, then these appliances could have been sitting there for two years. What a shame.

I have had very good luck with some of the new bleach cleaners on the market, Comet Cleaner with Bleach is my favorite but the Clorox version is just as powerful. A little of that on those gaskets and you'll be able to remove most of the stains, but sometimes they just never fade away completely. That is a beautiful refrigerator, I'm sure you're going to love it.

Mike,

I'm not sure on the seals. I would say to try diluted bleach to try and get more of the natural white out, but I'm not sure if that will be too hard on the seal or not. What are you using to clean the seals/interior currently?

Ben

Charcoal Briquettes...

a bucket of briquettes in a closed up refrigerator can do wonders to clear up the smell. Just leave them in there when you are not actually working on it. If nothing else, it will keep the smell from getting worse (They are great for when you have to store a refrigerator with the power off as well)

And that orange cleaning stuff that is always in the dollar stores can really help clean things up. Bleach water is a great thing, but be careful with it on the gaskets. I'd maybe try some diluted tilex or something like that first.

Good luck!

I bet you will eventually

get it restored to almost pristine condition. I haven't read all of your posts, but I have looked at all of your pics;
you have some very fabulous items. I would recommend moving it
to a place where you can leave the doors open for at least a month. My experience has been that if you leave these opened for a decent length of time the smell will evaporate, so to speak. Perhaps one of those non scented bacteria killing
sprays will hasten the deoderizing.

Some Progress

Thanks for all the advice and also the encouragement. I normally use Fantastik on everything. I swear by that stuff. But I'm using Lysol Disinfectant Antibacterial Kitchen Cleaner on this. I'm trying to clean and sanitize it at the same time. It seems this just is going to need one more weekend day. Not for the removable parts, but just for basic cavity. I'll give you a shot of my progress so far. First, before I started.
