Liking the Viking

The agitator in the Viking, is it called the Turbo vane?
I was looking in my stash of old Eaton's catalogues and it was mentioned in the 1964 models but no pic.
Your washer was heavily featured from 1974 on, probably before too.
Your deluxe model that is shown in the catalogue says it has a lint filter, where abouts would it be?
I am in search of a Viking square tub, but they just don't seem to surface. I know there must be some out there somewhere, I believe Eaton's called them The Wash Day Work Horse.
Lucky you to be in Burnaby, fond memories of a beautiful place

lint filter

Hi Brian, the lint filter was simply the drain hose put through the hole in the lid and strained through a stationary filter. Mine doesn't have the filter but it has the hole in the lid. I guess I could put something like a mesh over the hose and filter the water while I wash. BTW I'd love to see a pic of your harvest gold GSW wringer, that would be a Beatty, no? I've seen square tub Vikings before but not lately.
So Malcolm you saw the vids, glad you liked them.

another question

So when the washer was washing did you just put the pump on drain and it would pump the water thru the filter?
Or did the washer do it automatically when you started it?
Your deluxe model was also insulated?
It must be as heavy as hell.

exactly

I just put a nylon mesh on the end of the hose, like some sleazy pantyhose or whatever material I have lying around. Then just turn the lever to pump. No, nothing automatic at all, except for the timer which will time the wash and shut the machine off. This model doesn't appear to be insulated although it's a very heavy machine.

Hi Eddy

Thanks for the info on the washer.
It must be a lot older than your washer.
All the ones shown in the catalogues only show 1 lever or handle.
I watched your video and it makes me want one twice as bad.
For a powerful looking agitator it certainly didn't splash any water out.
It is really quiet too.
Thanks again.
Brian.

Speed Queen Love

Hi Eddy (again)!

That literature that gansky1 posted on the other thread with model FA9101 was very much like our harvest gold 70's SQ. The only thing ours didn't have was a control panel light, no soak timer, and no flotation rinse light. Other than that it was the exact same styling on the control panel. The timer had a light behind it that would illuminate while the machine was running. Maybe I'll get lucky and find another one like it eventually. We purchased ours from a home owner on the outskirts of town for $50.00. They said it didn't spin correctly. They had a mechanic come out and look at the machine and stated the washer would need to be replaced as it was a complicated fix. Silly fools, the guy just wanted to sell a new washer and dryer. All that was wrong was the pin on the fluid drive that attaches to the shaft of the motor was broken off. I replaced it with a cotter pin and it worked fine for a while - until the motor shaft snapped in half from having the belts on way too tight. I replaced the motor and we had this machine for quite a few years. They also had the matching dryer, but we didn't need one so we didn't purchase one. We had a dryer just like the one gansky1 had in the garage and now Ben in Iowa has the pair. We also had that exact same washer in harvest gold before it was traded for our 1983 Raytheon model (which we still have and use). The brake gave out and since it had a timed wash fill it would only coast to a stop and a lot of water would spin out before coming to a complete stop. This resulted in not filling the tub completely and I would not stand around to turn the dial around just to finish the load. Oh, the stories I remember about our SQ's!

About your water line - we replaced ours with 3/4 copper from the main to the meter. We've been replacing the old lead pipe whenever we've done remodeling and now it's all done. The last of it was replaced when we remodeled our bathroom and ran new plumbing there and to the attic for our 1/2 bath up there. That room is my other roommates space.

Mike
