I must be on a Hoover tangeant lately, don't mind me.But it seems to me that the 2 position Convertibles cleaned MUCH better than the 4 position machines, due to the lack of tilt in the nozzle. Also, the edge cleaning slots that were added in 1972,furthered the cleaning dip.By breaking the seal,so to speak of the nozzle to carpet, the Hoover could not air-lift the carpet as well, which was neede for the polished agitator bars to do their best at tapping the carpet several thousand times per minute.Thoughts?

IMHO, the 4 position cleaners did a much better job on low pile carpeting than the 2 position. I think the 4 position "high" setting was more adequate for the plushes than the 2. Never could figure out the "shag" setting. What would it accomplish?

Bobby is right

The 4 position cleaners did clean the very low pile glue down carpeting referred to in the late 60's as "Indoor-Outdoor"
However, set on "low" the back side of the Convertible's nozzle is raised off the carpet slightly, which caused them to scatter sand and such.
Aside from the low carpets, which the two position machines couldn't even touch, the 2-position machines would clean all other carpets much better.
Try this: set your 4position cleaner on LOW and on some low carpet. Now pour some ordinary table salt on the floor in front of the cleaner. Next remove your shoes and socks, and then try vacuuming up the salt...you'll definately feel some of it scatter back on your toes!!

Seemed to me the four position uprights were a bit easier to push than the two position. Is this so, or am I imagining things again?

I like the 4 position height adjustment. It is easily adjusted just by using your toe. It also does not "push down" when you pust the machine forward. The spring loaded 2 position is much like the 60 series and before. The rear springs CAN allow the nozzle to lift up off of the carpet. Don't get me wrong...the Hoover machines are the best in my opinion only...I just like the 4 position the best. In my house, my "super" 1070 Convertible just can't be beat...and I have had many vacuums old and new.

i like them both for different reasons. jeff knows what hes talking about. i like the versatility of the four-position machines, but thats all. the rear wheels/axle are too vulnerable with the four position adjustment. in commercial use, a convertible with the four position adjuster can suffer. as long as your carpeting is not glued-down, the two positions are fine. (im reminded of Toggleswitch when i say "two positions are fine"). ive used the 31 set on High on the standard generic plush carpeting found in many many homes and apartments and it was just right. The two position machines were meant to be:

Self adjusting, with the "high" setting for really thick rugs.
4-position Convertibles also have a thing for getting very wobbly as the years go by, namely the don't sit squarely on all 4 wheels, due to the way the rear axle is installed.
Of course there is a home-made "fix" for this too, and they are much better to use when the wheels are all square on the floor.

Jeff, i think we have all seen drunk Hoovers whos rear axle is so twisted it makes them teeter-totter. makes me sad. good thing i got some NOS convertible axles hidden away.

nice but...

Its not the axle thats usually bad, its the converter track, or on later models that silver plate that also holds the bag in place.
The axles were pretty sturdy, you'd really have to throw a Convertible around hard to bend that!
