Arrived home from a recording session this morning to find a big pile of roofing materials and privacy fencing in my yard. Ah yes, the reason I'm taking a staycation this summer.

I made the same effort 2 years ago.
Never again. Or I say so now.
Depends on the house for me.
My monster was built over 200 years ago and when I bought it and the roof was about 40 years old.
My hat is off to you Frigilux.

Greg--- I'm not actually doing any of the work! I hired a crew to do it. There's no way I can be up on a roof doing that kind of work with my bad right knee. I don't envy them working in the heat, either. It was 87 very sticky degrees here, today.
They decided to keep going 'til dark, as it has cooled off nicely and the humidity has gone down substantially, but man, they must be exhausted.
I'll post more pics as the project progresses, simply because I'm on staycation!!
Your house sounds like quite a place, Greg; 200 years old---that's amazing. My house is small and was built in '63. 1963, LOL.

I'm so glad we put a 40-year roof on my mom's old place a while back. At least when we move in (on Thursday) that's one less thing to tend to.
I really shouldn't be here right now. We are waaaaay behind in packing.
Home ownership does tend to produce more staycation years than not, especially here in Silicon Valley, but it has proven to be very much worth it for us. I highly recommend it to anyone who has the means in today's market.
Eugene, you will really enjoy the look after these improvements have been made, and they are both great selling points when and if the time comes. Maybe next year you can do something special since you stayed home this year.
Nice yard. It will look even nicer with the new fencing. There's always an element of excitement with a major home improvement project. Have fun with it!

Oh boy-that what my place needs-RTW as the contractor says-Roof,Trim,windows-can't afford it at this time.Need to win the lottery!For the past several years have been taking "Staycations" becuase of the price of gas and travel-and poor service while traveling.

Good luck with it all. Large capital improvements such as those are a great investment and help protect your most valuable investment--your home--.
I have found that keeping the chilled bottles of water flowing make for a happy crew. A crew that will do a bit more than the bare minimum.

Here's a
shot of mine frigilux. I stopped counting the roof leaks when I found #17. I was happy to get the new roof on. I was told the shingles should last 25 years. I hope that is indeed true.

Great house, Greg. And I'll bet it's built like a battleship, too. Very southern-looking compared to homes up here in MN. It's so cool you live in a home built 200 years ago. Talk about historic!

you have yourself. I decided to go after what I really wanted because you have the same amount of work on whatever you live in. I admire the options and choices people have with a Ranch. The only thing I didn't get with mine is a laundry room. I ended up putting a stack unit in my bathroom.
There is a cute Victorian house next door to me for sale for 60K. It does need updating (kitchen/bath) and a new roof.
How is the weather there this week? We are getting those hot and very humid days here now. I really feel for the guys working outside in the summer.
Currently I'm putting the guest room in shape (lots of plaster work there) so I hope by this fall I can have visitors staying over a few days.

We are absolutely going to miss our 1957 ranch home. A 1927 Tudor/Norman style with stairs and a choppy floorplan is not really our style but the financial benefits were too good to pass up. And there's also that gay ZIP Code factor . . .
I agree that owning any home usually means work, but fixing things in our new place will for sure be more complicated than they are in a 50's home with sheetrock as opposed to lath & plaster. Just one example. Greg, if anyone can relate to this, I'm sure you can.
BTW Greg, the '49 Westy stove didn't sell at the estate sale. We'll use it ourselves briefly until things settle down and I can put back the gas stub that my dad removed. I'll put the Westy in the garage so if you come up with a way to get it out there cheap, it might still be available for a while.

Why, thanks for asking, Togs! The roof will be finished today---there have been some rain delays; Fortunately, the crew only tears up whatever portion of the roof they can get done in a day, so there have been no leaking problems. Quality of work has been top-notch, as far as I can see. They're a fun group of guys, and I've been bringing them in out of the oppressive heat for food/water during their morning and afternoon breaks, which they greatly appreciate.
Next up: The fence! Will post pictures when it's up.
And by the way, staycations were more fun back when I drank, LOL!
