The return of top loaders?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Top loaders never went anywhere or "out of fashion." The models just got worse and worse as the years progressed.

The only comebacks as of now I picked up on are in the following categories:

AP: Agipeller
I: Impeller

Softest Suspension: GE and Samsung.

Most Useless "Agitator" Design: Whirlpool (AP) and Samsung (AP).

Full Tub Fills With Near 0 Movement: Whirlpool (AP and I) and Samsung.

Horrid Spray Rinses: Whirlpool (AP and I) and Samsung.

Most Explosions: Samsung.

Actually Has Cleaning Potential: LG (AP and I), BOL dual action Whirlpool, commercial dual action Maytag, GE dual action, GE agipeller and Speed Queen TC5.

Biggest Platform/Design Downgrade: Whirlpool and Speed Queen.

Problems with my Maytag Centennial---Clothes wrapping,EXCESSIVE drain cycle-The pump is sucking dry for a few min.Takes TOO LONG to fill.Need to balance it manually so the machine can spin.Oh how I want another WP Surgilator Imperial or a Hotpoint GE Rim-filter flow! These machines did a BETTER job and in less time with NO help from me!Even a wringer machine would be better than the abomination I now have!

Those newer Whirlpool machines can be real screwy at times same with the technology crap of today which is all style and NO substance and usually are slower than molasses when it goes through it’s various cycles. If I made machines and yes I’d use the old Whirlpool belt drive design, I would not even bother with electronic controls since machines with electronic controls tend to have unsatisfactory washing and rinsing performance and tend to break down sooner than is necessary.

Rex, you said in another thread that your VMW isn't agitating properly ... agitator spinning around in one direction instead of oscillating?  A possible cause of that is a bad motor capacitor.  Spin performance can also be affected.  A simple fix for someone with your skills.

Spin is normal. The agitator is normal-There is a weird fast short stroke agitate cycle at the beginning and end of the wash agitate cycle.During that fast mode is when I get the wrapping and tangling. So I have to stand by and unwrap the agitator from its "sarongs".Also I have to balance the load manually at spin otherwise I get the "shake&spin" the washer does a "dance"Oh how I want another WP-Kn BD machine or another GE/Hotpoint Rim-filter flow washer!Maybe a SQ washer in my future!ANYTHING but the VMW HORROR!Another thought-the agitator in the machine seems like the ones used in DD machines-maybe the older style DA agitator used in BD machines should have been used. And the machine needs a tub brake so the tub isn't moving during agitate.Think this may contribute to its ills.

The "intent" for the end of agitate period fast short stroke is to help redistribute/balance the load in preparation for spin.

Wondering if you're underloading.  Contrary to what seems intuitive, too small of a load for the fill level can cause items to bunch-up together instead of distributing properly ... like what can happen on a spin-drain machine when the load is too small, floats and congregates together when spin starts. Some VMW models have a proper dual-action agitator with independently rotating auger, some don't.

You can switch the agitator to a different style.  Find a VMW model with the type of agitator you want, look up the part number and order one from a parts supplier, or used from eBay, etc.

All of the one piece porcelain tubs of the vmw design can use any of the agitators of the older DD washers as they have the same tubs and agitator spline so ANY of them should fit. I just ordered by typing in agitator replacement for Whirlpool washers or Whirlpool flex vane agitator. The single actions work well in these.

There really wasn’t a comeback. They’ve offered top load models ever since HE corrupted the industry. Whirlpool for example has gotten lazy as we’ve known for some time, and recently they brought the look of a two piece agitator back for some of the models. In which the lower piece has a joke for fins, and the agitation driven by these motors are weak compared to the classic Direct Drives. It’s essentially a wash plate with a dual action clothes mover stuck on the center of it which makes it appear like a classic agitator, but couldn’t be farther away than one. The only top loader nowadays that will clean clothes is the new LG model which was mentioned. I have no clue if it’s reliable, I’m not the person to ask that question. It was cool to see the belt driven whirlpools with the same dual action surgilator that they used for decades with the DD machines, but since then WP has gotten very lazy with washers upon the downfall effect from high efficiency coming into play many many years ago now.

To reply #45 your "facts" are a little short sighted. The Amana will wash as well or better than most of what LG offers as a top loader. I've used my machine for over a year now and have filmed over 40 loads with the machine.

The truth is many of the old beloved machines you won't be able to get parts for anymore unless you can somehow fabricate parts or find other machines to swap out.

The only way things get better is if we demand better. Why don't we all flood Whirlpool with emails demanding better quality ?

I would like the top loader designs available in Brazil sold here. They have some pretty nifty designs and the styling is very contemporary. We get top loaders from Asia, why not Brazil?

I still don’t understand why Fisher & Paykel have discontinued their top loading washers in the US. Their top loaders are good performers.
