One thing I miss about southern Calif is the Santa Ana winds. During fall, it can be 55 or 60ºF and calm at night, then all of a sudden this strong, hot, very dry wind starts blowing from the east, or sometimes north. It's almost mystical. It sounds like 1000 freight trains rolling over the hills and valleys, and it blows every bit of marine layer, clouds and smog away. All that remains are crystal clear jewels of the city lights.
Unfortnately we don't get Santa Anas here in Northern Calif. We have an equivalent wind event but it's much weaker, half the time you don't even notice it.
