The husband is a retired airline pilot and his wife was a computer programmer for Gulf oil for many years. They never had any kids.

I met them through a retired airline pilots group that helps out with old airline employees. A friend in the group asked me to get involved with them. Even though the husband is like 92 and the wife is 88 or so they still live in their own home and get on pretty well. Besides, they live on the other side of town in the same house that they built in 1954. The husband no longer drives but his wife does.

One interesting thing is that even though the husband no longer flies he still can tell you who worked in what department at his airline and what years they worked there. Some of the stories of being a pilot in the 1940's & 50's were true adventures. There aren't that many of these old birds left.

Someone on here said that when dealing with old people even the simplest thing can become a major undertaking. I totally agree with that. These people were a case in point. I don't imagine I'll ever hear from them again.

I didn't want to make them seem bad, they actually are very, very warm and friendly people with a good sense of humor. They are just horribly stuck in their own ways if you get my drift.

And yes, they do hand wash all their dishes. Immediately after use. Their house is immaculately clean.

I live in a building with 59 other impoverished geezers and I can guarantee you, you can't tell ANY of them ANYthing. Their eyes roll back in their heads just like 26yo MBAs at an engineering company (Dell). Once people decide they already know everything worth knowing, their ears slam shut.

I'm serious. They don't want to be confronted with how little of their physical world they understand and they're very defensive about that. Gawd help me, if I ever get that feeble, somebody shoot me. Nevermind, I'll do it myself.
