"The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object."

I now seems to be official, the gavel of congressional power will pass to the Demorcratic Party for the first time in 12 years. Listening to the press reports through the day, some were jubilant, some somber and aprehensive, still others were denying it could be true and singing the woeful cries of wounded birds as the world witnessed one of the biggest political upheavals in a generation <br
Whatever your political leanings may be, we must remember first and foremost that we are all Americans. Record turnouts at the polls and the celebration of the victors should not overshadow the fact that our country is still obviously very divided. The recent political threads on this forum illustrate this on a very small scale, but they also illustrate how civil yet spirited debates between anyone who wished to participate can be provocative and healthy for our democratic processes. Some of the more notable posts have rung in my head for a couple of weeks. <br
How the congress wields their power in the coming two years will be a good indicator of the Democratic party's willingness to put aside petty, vengeful behavior and act in the best interest of our country. Remember too, they all work for us, Republican, Democrat, independents and even those who do not care. It is up to us that we see a better government come from this congress, write your congressional representatives often and respectfully. Even a few lines in an email can make a difference! This is your country, your democracy and your freedom, now go earn it ;-)
