Local Supermarket Manager

Told us once that someone came in and cleared out an entire shelf of Tide liquid detergent. Stuff the lot into his bag and made a hasty exit. Sadly by the time a customer found and informed him of what was going on the thief was already out of the door.

Don't know why this comes as a shock to anyone, just where to you think all those bottles of Tide liquid detergent being sold cheaply on fleaPay come from?

Shoplifting in general has vastly increased over the past decade or so, with many stores reporting huge losses and also taking a very hard line as well. Today if you are caught at least the larger stores *will* press charges. Problem is shoplifting in many states is a low level offence or crime therefore punishment upon conviction may just be a fine with perhaps a few days of jail and or community service. However if one is caught as part of a criminal ring and or the value of goods stolen reaches "grand larceny" amounts, that is a different story.

Part of the increase in petty thefts comes from the Internet. Places like fleaPay and CL are perfect places to fence stolen goods. Again where do you think all those drug store items being sold cheaply often in lots comes from?

eBay has become slightly less favourable since they made PayPal the mandatory and only method of payment. That at least provides some sort of tracking as to where the money goes.

If Tide wasn't so high priced I don't think they would have this problem.

I've noticed recently that thieves seem to be on the lookout for things that don't have serial numbers and are not traceable back to any one establishment.

Tide Prices Vary

Was speaking with a cousin of mine during one of the holiday family dinners. We got on the subject of detergent prices somehow and told her that liquid Tide goes on sale for $14.99/100oz bottle in my neck of the woods often enough. She topped that by saying those same bottles are around $10 regular price in her part of New Jersey.

I have heard that the Tide Pods are becoming a popular shoplifting item in the family dollar stores around here- women open the package and dump them in their purse, put the container back on the shelf and make a clean getaway... A while back somebody told me to check detergent bottles before I buy them, because apparently at walmart, people have bought detergent (especially Tide), take it home, empty the contents into a different container, refill with water and return it, claiming they bought the wrong product. It of course goes back on the shelf and is bought by an unsuspecting customer, only to find that they just bought an overpriced jug of soapy water. Really sad in my opinion. Sure I like Tide, but if I dont feel like spending mega bucks for it, I just buy a cheaper brand.

The Food Lion store in my neighborhood says people steal the large packages of Dove soap bars. They put them in a special container that trips an alarm if it is taken from the store. The Casheer takes the soap out of the container at check-out.We don't have the Tide filchers here-instead Dove filchers.

And they are blatant too...

a few moths ago at a local BJ's my parents and I watched this woman stuff a two packages of dog treats into a box of some other product (you know those boxes that are 50% empty anyway). And I'm sure she knew we all saw her do it. Didn't bat an eyelash. Shameful.
