Today's weather has been primarily ice and snow all day long. When the temperature dipped below freezing, we decided to close up shop early around 3:30. I went home, did a few chores and then took a nap. I awoke about 20 minutes later to a loud metallic bang! I looked out the window, and saw these two cars on my front lawn, about 10 feet from my house (front yard is particularly small anyways)steaming and smoking.
I live at sort of a T intersection, and my house is on the broad side of the T the intersecting road becomes a dirt driveway that gives access to my yard and my neighbor's yards (and the back door neighbor's garage). Well the kid driving the sports car, a pizza deliveryman, must have thought that the road continued through. He blew right through the stop sign at the T (from right to left in the picture) just as my neighbor in the Buick a few doors down was traveling through at about 20 mph (traveling towards the cam). It was a pretty major impact that shook my house!
Now, the sports car got turned 180 degrees around from the impact with the Buick, and landed about 10 feet away from the corner of my house. There were no siginificant injuries thankfully. I think this was due to the fact that the ice and snow allowed the cars to slide a significant distance and dissapate the energy. The sports car had some pretty serious damage to the passenger door, which is hard to see in this picture. The Buick had a bent bumper and a broken headlight. My neighbor driving the Buick didn't have any injuries but was pretty shook up. The kid driving the sports car had an achey sholder.
Looks like I'll be getting some landscaping work out of it, since I got tire marks across my yard, and the cars uprooted some railroad ties that were sitting at the corner of the shared driveway. That shows how hard the impact was! The railroad ties weigh about 300 pounds, and were anchored by steel rods driven into the ground! Well, I needed new grass planted anyways!
